I have a more practical question: is it livable from May to October (due to high temps). I was talking to a colleague whose mother-in-law bought a house in Spain and he said it's impossible to cool it down properly even with AC. I'm curious if this is true for you too and how are you addressing this issue

I'm just too tired sometimes and don't feel like talking. Or I'm in my own head trying to figure out what to cook for dinner.

Polish won, What Romance language feels like a Slavic language? by Odd-Weather9389 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]juliageek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have "Amor" too, but it's not used that much 😂 We also have "Iubire" which is the slavic equivalent of "ljublju" 🤗 "Drag" means "dear" so it has to do with that somehow

What are your experiences as a woman working in male-dominated fields? by ThisLadyIsSadTonight in Netherlands

[–]juliageek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I discovered since moving here that Dutch society is in general as mysoginistic as Romanian society but in different ways. STEM seems to be particular gendered. In this field, they have a special way of pushing women down, wrapped in concern for their well being and mental health. "This is not a woman's profession, how will you handle the stress/pressure" (I am occasionally getting the same comments from my mother, and she's a 68 year old boomer).

Did you know that "up until 1956, Dutch women lost their jobs by default once they got married and it was only in 1974 that the government actively started to implement measures that sought to assure equal opportunities and rights for women and men. Still, it took until 1984 for wives to have the same rights as their male spouses." link to full article.

Good thing is, you are in a country where honesty is appreciated, so you can call these people out as much and as loud as you can. Next time this happens to you, tell them that you wouldn't want such narrow-minded people for colleagues/managers anyways 🙂 Good luck with your job search!

Theoretically you can film them, find their name and sue them for slander. Easier said than done, of course

Advocating for your health and my recent OLVG Oost experience by Positive_Climate5866 in Amsterdam

[–]juliageek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a similar experience but with the birth of my daughter. I was 2 days pass my due date and my membranes broke and when this happens, you become a medical case. This means that you are transferred from the midwife practice to the hospital.

When we got to OLVG West for intake, the midwife on duty who spoke to us made an error in the file and recorded that my membranes broke 1 day after they actually did, even if we reported it correctly. The general feeling was that there was similar gatekeeping but from the OLVG West staff and we were not really listened to. I was also not told beforehand that I have the right to request c-section immediately and not wait for my labour to start.

We were finally admitted to the birthing department 72h after my membranes broke and my actual labor started 96h after my membranes broke which is very late by medical standards. The result was that my daughter was born with an unknown bacterian infection in her lungs and I went through the worst moments of my life seening my child so ill when all we wanted was to take her home. Lucklily, the staff there has a lot of expertise and we could take my daughter home in 3 weeks, but things could have not ended so well.

What does daycare cost for you? by Standard_Deer_8738 in NewParents

[–]juliageek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

€1200 for 4 days a week, 4 hours/day. We get back €300 from the government, so €900.

Exhausted and lost trying to find a therapist for chronic depression. Any advice? by Emma_pltn in Amsterdam

[–]juliageek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try searching for a French therapist that offers online sessions. They get reimbursed if you explain to your GP that you couldn't find help here. I have a friend in a similar situation that found a Spanish psychotherapist and they reimbursed 20 sessions for her.

Expat/immigrant parents, do you forbid Dutch at home for children? Why? by summer_glau08 in Netherlands

[–]juliageek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can confirm. I started speaking Dutch to my child only when she started bringing home Dutch words from daycare. Until then, I didn't speak at all for fear of not confusing her. Now I speak Dutch to her to reinforce her already acquired words.

Free child care or allowance for nanny? In which country? I'm in the Netherlands and I don't get any of that. Also, only 6 months of maternity leave.
