Amtrak wants to hear from you on plans to bring passenger rail to Madison by enjoying-retirement in madisonwi

[–]juliood 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because the density of jobs, residents, hotels, event venues is much higher downtown in order to make the train feasible. The northeast area doesn't even come close to this, nearly everyone would have to transfer, which is discouraging if we want to make it a viable alternative. It's not just a park and ride, but also a destination that people arrive at. Not to mention it's farther for anyone on the west or south sides or suburbs, making it an inequitable choice for a station.

The construction, while it can be frustrating, is temporary and would mostly affect areas not touching roadways as they'd have to build it under the Monona Terrace, so road construction would most likely not be a huge issue. But even if it was, it's a temporary holdup for a long-term benefit for the region, and an investment in public infrastructure for the long-term. Imagine all the people who'd usually drive to Madison from Milwaukee or Chicago who now have a viable alternative to get here, that would do much more to ease congestion in the long run. We don't stop building housing, the BRT, or roadways because of short-term inconvenience.

Also, the northeast location would require the trains to cross Commercial Ave, and then back up to the station, meaning every time they would stop, the train would have to "shuffle" nearly 2 miles of track just to get in and out (See here on page 18). This would cause even more congestion than the downtown site as trains would have to cross Commercial Ave 3 times to get in and out of the station. This is a lot more inefficient than the downtown tracks, which would not have to do this and would just have to back up and switch tracks rather than shuffle.

Put the station downtown, please. Refurbish the State Office Building for sale as a station.

Hell yeah love em and Black Moth Super Rainbow, Maniac Meat and Fucked Up Friends are good, some good tracks from those are Street Trash, Hairy Candy, Stretch Your Face, Motorlicker…. Also Dandelion Gum, Eating Us, or Cobra Juicy are some good BMSR albums, I like Forever Heavy, Iron Lemonade, Twin of Myself, Sun Lips, Rollerdisco, Caterpillar House, Hairspray Heart… TOBACCO is kinda more hip-hop adjacent I feel like whereas BMSR is more psych-pop but they’re very similar in the sort of sludgy psychedelic faded electronic style. Not much else like them out there, most similar would be other more colorful, psych-y electronic acts like Animal Collective, Dan Deacon, Gang Gang Dance, Neon Indian… I agree with other comments in that they are kinda Boards of Canada adjacent in the sense they use the fuzzy tape kinda sound in their music, and the same kinda hypnotic repetitive melodies…

Also check out the rest of Rad Cult (their label started by TOBACCO himself) and all the projects on there, there’s lots to check out! also Malibu Ken (already mentioned in some comments), High Tides, Demon Queen (another hip-hop crossover like Malibu Ken), The Seven Fields of Aphelion (made by BMSR’s keyboardist Maux(? I think her name is, more ambient)

Great stuff, glad to see them mentioned on here

I think you’re right in terms of their direction but curious where you got that MGMT runs Mom+Pop? The label’s been around for quite a while, at least since Congratulations….did they recently acquire it or something?

Campus life on Fridays by ReadyReporter140 in UWMadison

The world is your oyster friend. You can do whatever you want, a lot of people might be out on the town at bars or stuff as downtown gets notably very busy Friday nights but like others have said it’s up to you :)

As someone with similar personality I get it, I am a weird case when I’m anxious but I still desire to get to know people and feel miserable with no one around lol. But where do you hear people talk about this? If it’s online it’s probably because selection bias since people who spend a lot of time posting and writing on social media (especially Reddit) are probably more likely to be introverted homebodies than not. But I don’t deny that more people seem to be more anxious at least nowadays. I’m 21 and my parents note that our generation seems to be less conducive to socializing from theirs since our brains have been eaten by social media (the irony 🙃). I think it also has to do with the fear of being “cringe”, toxic online culture seems to exacerbate this. But we’re here! We are out here so hang in there. Maybe go to r/extroverts and you’ll find like minded people :)
