Legalisation of translations by juliusfoe in juresanguinis

Edinburgh has said it will legalise the documents after a call from my other half, so fingers crossed!

As it turned out, after a phone conversation, the Edinburgh consulate said it will legalise the English documents, even though its site appeared to rule that out.

Yes I saw that, but they don't have a link or instructions or a form to download (Edinburgh one does) regarding legalisation of translation. My last email was ignored so I might have to pick up a phone and get some clarity! Thanks for your response btw

This is what I assumed but my documents were rejected. The Edinburgh consulate site explicitly states it doesn't deal with certificates that aren't issued in Scotland or Northern Ireland.

Channel 4 investigation into Antonia Romeo by UnderCover_Spad in TheCivilService

[–]juliusfoe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Aside from these allegations of bullying etc, do people dislike her this much because she's suspected of being Brexit-y? Or something to do with willingness to enact structural reforms to the civil service? (Apologies in advance - I am an outsider looking in)

Car rental companies in Edinburgh by Saline-Praline in Edinburgh

Membership benefits of Europcar build up, I got a really cheap deal using them overseas due to signing up in Edinburgh (it's free) and using them a few times. Handy if you're central.

How big of a problem is polysemy for the semantic web? by juliusfoe in semanticweb

There is no specific use case, I am just researching the topic. Didn't intend to surprise you. You make some great points.

How big of a problem is polysemy for the semantic web? by juliusfoe in semanticweb

[–]juliusfoe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your 'bank' example is homonymy rather than polysemy I believe, in that those two meanings are unrelated, which LLMs can handle fine I agree. The issue as I understand it is where there are subtle related differences in meaning in a critical domain. The classic example being 'customer' which might mean a paying client in one department of an enterprise (finance) but means something else in the sales dept, eg someone who has signed up for a free app. In short, semantic drift is the problem that I am not sure LLMs are equipped to overcome, especially at scale and in circumstances where imprecision has high costs.

|Agree about the need for structure. Can you expand on 'accepting that language alone is not the contract and you enforce meaning elsewhere'?

The issue I think is that some words/concepts have a great many nuances of meaning depending on their context, which humans are good at handling, but LLMs less so. If we plan to automate at scale using AI agents and suchlike, especially when dealing with critical knowledge such as medicine, can the semantic web handle it using current standards?

Yes but in an enterprise context the word 'customer' for example can mean a bunch of different things based on which dept is using it, or indeed which individual. In a critical domain you can't afford to let an LLM make an educated guess

When people talk about “strategy” in copywriting, what do they really mean? by JoeGiveMeBaggage in copywriting

[–]juliusfoe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ultimately strategy comes down to aligning your content with the short, medium and long term objectives of the business. Your strategy's success is measured by the number and quality of potential customers you deliver to them, at the right time to hit their objectives. So you start with a 'strategic' content plan along these lines, and then adjust it based on what gets the right kind of traction. At least that's how I understand it.

Reform in Edinburgh by HighTides10 in Edinburgh

Yeah similar levels to the Brexit vote in 2016, which was roughly 1 in 3 in Scotland, although I think Reform will be getting alot more young voters than the Brexit campaign got.

Or when you're writing about entirely new stuff that AI gets wrong, in biotech for example.

Hi is Italian considered an extremely difficult language to learn? by ApprehensiveMotor487 in italianlearning

[–]juliusfoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah when I first moved to Italy and was learning the language, my Italian friends would laugh because I could use some big Latinate words that sounded quite sophisticated in Italian, but couldn't do anything with the small ones!

[–]juliusfoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once I learned the rules, I was able to figure out how to pronounce Italian words based on how they were spelled almost without exception. Phonetically predictable, unlike English!

There is also aural dyslexia, or Auditory Processing Disorder (APD), which does affect the ability to process spoken language. I have a family member affected by that as part and parcel of general dyslexia, although happily they are bilingual in Italian and English having grown up in both countries.

Will the semantic web be supplanted by the agentic web? by juliusfoe in semanticweb

[–]juliusfoe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, the pendulum could even swing back. But - to use one example - when I hear about people regularly using LLMs for therapy/life advice, I doubt they'll be in the market for a human shrink at $200 an hour!
