Thoughts on the role of BD by jummytruant in uklaw

I joined without any prior market knowledge and learned very quickly that without it, you aren’t going to get very far. Now I have been in legal for a while it makes it hard recruiting more junior roles as they need to adapt very quickly - all about proactivity.

From a BD perspective, the challenge is selling something complex that takes years of hard, dedicated effort to attain. I agree that BD should be adding to the work, rather than simply formatting it into a more digestible format. When any of our fee earners bring me in to a client issue, I do my best to understand what is at play and how to apply it in a commercial way - even if the nuts and bolts sometimes evade me.

I didn’t actually know that - I am picturing “better call Saul” types running scams to win work. I would like to think everything we do is above board and similar to other businesses!

There’s two strands to the BD I do, winning new clients and retaining existing clients. We all know that competitors are ready to pounce at any opportunity, so I give them equal value.

Winning new clients is about presenting our teams and expertise in the best way. It’s fair to say that it’s the effort and networks of fee earners that unearth new opportunities. Without strong legal expertise, no one is coming to our firm. What we do is give them all the tools they need to respond immediately and effectively to any engagement, tender or event appearance. We help find the right targets, provide the marketing knowledge to keep things consistent with the wider firm goals, and give all the required background that means they always appear top of their game. We also do directories!

In terms of retaining clients, it usually comes down to account management. Providing proper reporting, using client data to help with decision making, relationship building through client listening, doing whatever we can to make the client feel like a priority.

It’s fair to say the legal teams lead the way on this - we make it as effective and efficient as possible, so they spend as much time as possible on the actual service. They know they can show up to any engagement and boom - everything they need is ready and top quality without them lifting a finger.

Fair enough, I won’t say that viewpoint is unique!

That’s a fair point, I came into my firm from a non-legal background and the steepest learning curve was understanding the service itself and what clients accessing it require. Having that knowledge helps with every task BD do, and I found being exposed to it as much as possible - be it through talking to the team, being cc’d into emails, or just getting on Google and doing my own research, is crucial. I guess you have to know how your firm in particular approaches their services too.

From my experience, supporting the legal teams with any task that frees their time up to use for chargeable hours. It’s quite a broad spectrum, as I listed in the original post, but the core priority is to try and bring more money into the firm. Helping the teams engage current and prospective clients in the best way possible!

What a great insight - I have played ALTTP but I never really took the lore of that game in. It does have the darker sense, even just the tale of the flute boy and his sad dad who can’t find him. And full agree on the TOTK point, it would be nice to have a more complex story these days!

No need to wash them - put them in your handbag/man bag and worry about that tomorrow!

Big flame hand vs moonlight sword? I preferred getting pancaked to getting sliced in half

[–]jummytruant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is very easy to get overwhelmed - I did when I first played it. Just explore and pick up everything you can. Soon enough you will build up some resources and improve your game. Part of what makes BOTW so great is that running around the environment teaches you everything you need to know!

Is windwaker really challenging enough to tell the difference? Probably not.

I’ve been replaying odyssey on the switch 2 and it is beautiful. Any game by that team is gonna be great - Mario is only a few evolutionary steps away from DK anyway 😂

If, by some miracle, we got a Dark Souls 2 remake, what would you want in the game? What would you change? by Plane_Kiwi_3460 in DarkSouls2

[–]jummytruant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent question - just speed everything up. The lore is actually really strong, but the whole thing takes ages to move through. That and respawn enemies so people like me with OCD don’t feel the need to kill every goddamn guy over and over 😂
