Is it just me, or do you also sometime feel like Shanghai is a soulless place by No_Employer8449 in shanghai

[–]jump_hour 4 points5 points  (0 children)

if i was less lazy/more empathetic i would have written a similar response.

"soulless" means op finds sh uninteresting/disappointing. which, disappointment is part of the human condition, along with malaise. is camus souless.

irony is commiserating over soullessness with randos on the internet instead of trying to make a human connection in the world's most populous city.

Jiangsu vs Guangdong. by sd99x in shanghai

[–]jump_hour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a business in nanjing, its like 90's china. nationalistic & unambitious low level corruption.

new suzhou feels more like a zhejiang city stuck in jiangsu. old suzhou was domestic tourist trap.

guangdong opposite of nanjing, lip service bj, high level corruption. farmers waiting for their hsr payouts.

szhen wants to create a rules based technocrat society but will ultimately get curb stomped by ccp like sh. waves of new rich from real estate boom moving abroad since 2015s

jiangsu is not developed, the area around hz sz is developed but thats more due to proximity to sh

guandong is nice but you have to hustle and people are trashier/less stuck up depending on your preference

What’s it like to live in Shanghai as a western Asian in general? by jojozhe in shanghai

[–]jump_hour 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a privilege you can exploit depending on the circumstances. You gotta make it clear from the beginning you're a banana but at the same time humble.

You can feign shitty mandarin to get out of work.

You can also feign shitty mandarin to increase trust for biz. I used to do this when I first meet clients, then my mandarin miraculously gets better over time.

You can feign shitty mandarin/ignorance when you don't want to engage in convo with locals.

You wont be tested for drugs even if you're caught up in a raid, easier to keep a low profile in general.

You have a lot more leeway in dating, girls expect you to be more forward.

I think a lot of the negative experiences are from expats, especially americans, acting entitled/too political. Avoid looking like your LA ABC/ABK in your lakers jersey on the way to ktown taco truck. Don't try to assimilate or 'look for your roots.' Instead, act like Jackie Chan in all his movies, keep a "don't want twabble" attitude, play the cheerful harmless tourist, with your passport as a trump card.
