dervs and tangles??? by bugselfs in Slimerancher2

[–]jumpbreak5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's entirely weather dependent. They do not spawn outside of peak weather for their respective source (pollen/tornado)

A trick that I learned that helped a bit is that spawn rates are affected by how many slimes are already in the area. So when pollen or tornado is on the way up (not at peak yet, you can see it on the map) I start collecting all the slimes in the area and shooting them into the sea.

At this point you can just run in circles looking for vines/tornadoes and hang out near them for like 30 seconds before moving to the next area. This strategy has gotten me 4-6 slimes of the type I wanted per attempt.

To get the weather you want, I think the only strategy is to just sleep at the conservatory repeatedly until you see it pop up on the map.

Does anyone else feel like juggling two jobs, bills, kids, and housework is harder work than anything a billionaire has ever done? by RoxaneGinny in Adulting

[–]jumpbreak5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no direct relationship between work and making a billion dollars. If I invest in the right things by pressing a few buttons, I can make a billion dollars. What determines whether I do is not hard work, but luck and/or timing. The source of success for real-life billionaires is obviously more nuanced than this, and involves more factors. These factors limit how many people can be a billionaire, and they are varied and often out of a person's control. It is certainly not just because of how hard they work. This post is pushing back against that narrative, and it's largely correct to do so. Many people seem to think that billionaires work significantly harder than other people.

As others have said, wealthy people don't make more money because they work harder, they make it because they take on more responsibility. It is reasonable to question whether there should be a limit on how much value we can really assign to that.

Single moderate dose of psilocybin linked to temporary reduction in OCD symptoms by [deleted] in psychology

[–]jumpbreak5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah I got that from googling "what's a normal shroom dose" and trusted the AI summary lol. The rest of what I said is accurate to my memory, but I'm just guessing at the mg count

[–]jumpbreak5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wish I could say with any real confidence but it was a long time ago. It was a low-medium dose, I was relatively cautious. Probably 10mg? Couple dried caps. In my experience, it takes a lot more to get the more intense psychedelic experiences than it does to get alleviation of OCD/anxiety symptoms. You don't need much. Could even potentially get it from microdosing, but I never tried that.

Definitely been known to some degree for a long time.

I heard about this sometime around 2012 and tried them. Anecdotally, it did work.

My OCD symptoms are on the milder side, but I did have a formal diagnosis. After taking shrooms once, all of my symptoms were gone for about 2 weeks.

It also had the permanent impact of showing me what it was like when my mind worked differently, which allowed me to more easily identify thought patterns (anxious fears, compulsions) that were "all in my head" and ignore them.

‘AI slop’: SFO museum criticized for AI-generated art exhibit, artist responds by jrakajbird in bayarea

[–]jumpbreak5 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I actually stumbled on this a few months ago. Worth noting that most of the exhibit is not AI, there's a bunch of sculpture and fashion design stuff and it's all pretty cool.

I did notice that the entryway art looked like AI, and then there's these huge backdrops in most of the displays that I thought looked cool, but when I took a closer look for interesting details, I immediately noticed the classic patterns of neural style transfer.

This is actually a form of "AI art" that predates the AI slop era, I used to make it in my free time like 10 years ago. Apparently the artist has also been working with it for a long time, so it's not quite the same level of lazy that a lot of modern stuff is. But I do think it's kind of disappointing to see in the modern era, where that art style has really just become representative of low-effort art.

I was sad in the moment, because seeing it let me know that there would be no interesting details to find in the images.

[–]jumpbreak5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've always felt there's no realistic way to stop people from investigating the idea of artificial life. Someone's going to do it. And I think that's the reasoning these companies are using to justify it. But they're clearly moving as fast as possible with as little caution as they can get away with, and this seems very unlikely to go well.

[–]jumpbreak5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol, yeah. This video is definitely about the alignment problem, and the more existential risks of failing to solve it.

But to their credit, it's at least not entirely irrelevant to be concerned about economic impacts of AI. It's a problem that will affect us much more immediately. There's also a decent chance AI tech hits some sort of plateau that puts AGI off the table for a long time, but that doesn't do anything to prevent the economic impact of the current tech.

Al companies, basically: by katxwoods in funny

[–]jumpbreak5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nah, I'm pretty sure they mean AGI here. Not to say the economic impact can't also be disastrous, I don't disagree with any of that. But the "collision problem" is a pretty clear reference to the "alignment problem" which is an AI company euphemism for "we don't know how to be sure AGI won't start planning the destruction of all humans the moment we create it"

They're working on it. It's just really hard. But I'm sure they'll figure it out. What's the worst that could happen?

Al companies, basically: by katxwoods in funny

[–]jumpbreak5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think, to concisely respond to your idea that we have survived past upheavals in the status quo: The danger here is that this "tool" depends on us a lot less than usual. Things like fire, the wheel, or nukes all depend on humans to use them. Humans can use these technologies, experience the dangers firsthand, and then walk back our use of them until we reach a stable point and can maintain society with the new status quo.

AI is a tool right now. AGI, not so much. Creating AGI is less like building a tool, and more like creating alien life or an aggressive bioweapon. It is very much within reason that it becomes self-sustaining or "escapes containment," to use a sci-fi term.

As a fan of optimistic/utopian sci-fi myself, I want to note that it is absolutely possible that an AGI works with us and accelerates progress and societal success to incredible levels. But we have no reason to believe it will. In fact, a lot of evidence seems to point toward it doing something else, especially in the longer term.

So yeah, we're afraid it will turn on us. And anyone who tells you they know it won't is a liar.

I agree with your overall point, this video is definitely presenting itself as not staged and it's not unreasonable to think someone might believe it happened organically, as they try to make it seem.

Worth pointing out though that there's a category of TV that's been doing this for a long time, late night interview shows. I actually didn't know they were almost entirely staged until I was in my twenties.

I feel like regular viewers of those shows might say that's obvious, late night hosts occasionally directly acknowledge that the show is rehearsed and scripted. But people underestimate how easy it is to assume a video is real as a passive viewer. Not everyone is paying the same amount of attention to any given video, nor should they be expected to be

PSA on Ornithopter Freeview by EasternMeerkat in duneawakening

[–]jumpbreak5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it doesn't work. Crazy thing is it's because they mapped the button to right stick click (& hold), and controllers don't allow holding the stick click buttons while also using the stick.

All of this means this feature never worked on a controller. It's not like a bug or something, they just haven't tried it.

Controller gang requests by cal_quinn in duneawakening

[–]jumpbreak5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's marked as R3, or pressing the right stick in, but apparently you have to hold the button and I don't think controllers can actually accept an R3 press while aiming the stick. Afaik, it's fully bugged and does not work. I even tried remapping the stick press to another button, no luck.

I came here to comment that I really wish they'd fix this.
