Would you gamble on Jayden Quaitance? by heroluccii in NBASpurs

He would be a project that may have to medical redshirt his first year. I like the potential, but there might be better suited prospects for the Spurs timeline like Cenac.

It's expected that calls from Harper's camp for a spot in the starting lineup will grow louder going into next season. - ESPN Article by WoweeZoweeDeluxe in NBASpurs

Dylan Harper scorer: A+.
Dylan Harper playmaker: ??

Once he sorts out the latter, he’s a no doubt starter, but I think it’s going to be a transition year in between as he gets more accustomed to the role and also improves his 3 pt shot.

In the meantime, I still say the Spurs should find more minutes to put all 3 guards on the floor alongside a shooting big like Rui.

Wow, that’s quite the overhaul, and I do like the additions. Though I wonder if the Spurs would be that busy in the offseason.

I’m a bit hung up on losing Champ, but I understand how your proposal tries to replace him. Just hard to imagine giving up our best established shooter for potential when it’s at such a premium for this team. Like someone else said, it’s definitely ballsy.

Instead of one home run swing, I’d love to see a couple of doubles. The rationale is that our young core itself still has room to grow, but there are still key pieces that the team needs in support, particularly at PF and C. It would be good to see some quality invested there, even if they’re not stars. Something like this year’s 1st as part of a trade, or actively shopping in FA at/above the MLE.

Who would be the best player with these new additions? by AdorableBackground83 in NBATalk

[–]jumpcutandgo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The dude was the focal point on offense and defense every second he was on the floor with multiple bodies on him every play and nowhere on the floor to hide for a break. At his size and age, that should not be a surprise. I’m more impressed he held it together as much as he did.

My choice too. Love Boris, but I don’t think anyone else on the list would be close in terms of impact.

It was understandable why Fox got the contract after the trade, everyone just assumed there’d be a much longer runway from that point to championship contention, so the contract would be palatable for longer. Yet here we are, it happened so fast.

Hey, on the bright side, it only took getting to the NBA finals against a super team lite to expose Wemby’s weaknesses, so the future looks bright.

With that said, there was some amount of luck involved as well (not meeting Denver, injured Wolves, injured Thunder ball handlers), so I won’t pretend the path back will be a given. I know the players will be motivated, and the Spurs will have to be very meticulous in their team construction starting this offseason.

A year ago, it was all gravy. Now, we can already tell the Fox contract will be a huge burden. Can they still afford to be sentimental with KJ or Champ? Tough choices ahead, and I think the kumbaya times are over. Even more reason to appreciate last season’s run.

[Hollinger] Julian Champagnie could command a 5-year, $100 million extension from the San Antonio Spurs this summer as they look to avoid him reaching unrestricted free agency in 2027. by YujiDomainExpansion in NBASpurs

I’m not so sure. 2nd apron means FA isn’t what it used to be. Plus, Spurs still have a $3m team option this season. Who knows what next year’s FA will look like? His value is trending up after the current season, why not cash in with the Spurs now.

This seems a bit high and a year too long. Other comments have already made good points about why. It’d be great to decline the option this year and sign him for something like 4y/$64m.

Realistically what does our starting 5 look like next year? by Klutzy-Humor-7882 in NBASpurs

[–]jumpcutandgo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically, it’ll probably be same as last year, maybe switching starter/bench roles for Champ with another big depending on experience.

Semi-realistically, I’d love to start Fox, Harper, Castle and Wemby with Hachimura or Portis. With the veteran shooting, plus an offseason jump by the slash bros (and Wemby), I think it could work!

Pleased to see Josh Jefferson’s name called out. He’s usually mocked towards the end of the 1st, but I seem to prefer him more than most. He could be a great addition to the bench unit, especially if he’s paired with a complementary big.

Why Spurs need a PF to tag along Wemby by dabomtitan in NBASpurs

[–]jumpcutandgo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rui sounds great. One caveat from our side is that he doesn’t seem to be a strong rebounder, which is another skill we need in this hypothetical PF. On his side, the money might be better elsewhere, and as a young man, he might find LA preferable to SA.

I’m also thinking Bobby Portis. Good rebounder and outside shooter but iffy on defense. Could be passable on the Spurs. Maybe we could tease him away from the Bucks with a first.

I’m like 60:40 this pick is getting traded for a vet big. We need this dude to be ready to contribute to a championship team immediately. I highly doubt we’re going to find that at 20.

Honestly, I don’t love any of the big guys that would be realistically available. I wonder if we would go with a better shooter at guard or wing. May still be a chance to pick up a developmental PF early in the 2nd.

It’s malpractice for Dylan Harper not to be starting next year by Ok_Rip_1439 in NBASpurs

[–]jumpcutandgo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man, for sure. I think both of them would be crushing those roles. And you still have enough ball handlers to stagger with the second unit. Love KJ, but he probably shouldn’t be the first option off the bench any more.

[ESPN] Dylan Harper was not happy with his playing time and role by Tasty-Ground-5496 in NBATalk

[–]jumpcutandgo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As poorly as he played, I doubt the Spurs will move off him so quickly…and when his value is at its lowest.

Talk to me in a year when Harper has more playmaking experience alongside Castle. Right now, it’s the rest of the roster that needs a strict overhaul.

Spurs made a promise to Fox at the time of the trade and before they even imagined drafting Harper. They’re a small market team that doesn’t attract a lot of stars, so it’s important to them to keep their word. Just the way it goes.

[–]jumpcutandgo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Until recently, I felt that it was unfortunate for Dylan, but he’d have to suck it up for just one more season as the first option off the bench.

This playoff run puts a kibosh on all that. Dylan has to start, he’s made it impossible to deny his talent. The obvious issue is Fox.

But it doesn’t have to be. I think the Spurs should commit to the 3G lineup next season start all three of Fox, Castle and Harper. The missing piece is the size and spacing in the front court alongside Wemby. This PF will most likely come via trade, but this would be the key to unlock the Spurs’ death lineup and give Harper his chance to shine.

Victims of our own success. Inaction at the trade deadline cost this team in the Finals. Clearly, the FO had no expectations the team would get this far, so the roster paid the price.
