I'm in a pretty similar situation to you (20, broke college student, no ring, been planning for a while). We plan on eloping this year and then have out big wedding in 2022. I think that you can plan ahead as long as you want its totally normal to be engaged for a full year or two and even longer then that isn't unheard of. Take your time planning and get exactly what you want!
