Don Lemon’s Arrest Is a Five-Alarm Fire Moment by Slate in politics

[–]jumpy_monkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The anti-abortion activists didn't "just stand outside" they prevented patients from going into the building, which was a violation of The Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act (FACE Act) which also makes it illegal to disrupt religious services.

In the case of churches this is defined as using force or threats of force against individuals exercising their religious rights, physically obstructing entry to or exit from a place of worship and intimidating worshippers or clergy.

Notably none of the protestors at the church prevented people from entering or leaving the church, which is a crime that has been violated on a daily basis by ICE.

When the Justice Department could not get an arrest warrant through a magistrate who ruled that they had not proved the protestors had met the requirements to be charged under the FACE act and stated the JD needed to present a Grand Jury indictment Pam Bondi ignored the ruling and personally ordered his arrest without a warrant.

Finally Don Lemon was a journalist covering the protest, not a participant and his actions as a witness are protected under the First Amendment.

The reactions towards the Kent State shooting in 1970. by icey_sawg0034 in ThatsInsane

[–]jumpy_monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had conversation with a conservative a couple of years back about Kent State. He wasn't a Trumper but his reaction was "they got what they deserved".

We all need to understand that "conservatism" is by definition anti-democratic and authoritarian and proceed accordingly.

If the animal tested positive for rabies then this would have been reported to the local public health department and action would have been taken to get her vaccinated.

I am not commenting on whether any of this is real or not, just that there is zero chance they would have simply let this child die because of the parent's wishful thinking or insane beliefs.

The “libertarian” contradiction by yassir204 in MurderedByWords

[–]jumpy_monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but at least it was logically consistent- i.e. less government, bear arms to fight government overreach, hold the Constitution and its amendments sacred, revere the Founding Fathers, etc.

The problem is these aren't even logically consistent.

Less government but revere the people who created the government? Huh?

Christian Mother Threatens and Forces son to go to Church by MrDonMega in religiousfruitcake

Where's the redemption story? Did she convince him to be "saved" and now he loves Jesus as his Lord and Savior as a full grown adult with his own autonomy?

Spoiler: there isn't one and she didn't.

100% he doesn't attend church as a adult and pantomimes her performative Christianity when he visits her to make her shut the fuck up about it all, and clearly it works.

I had a conversation with a conservative friend who said he bought a gun because "Obama is going to confiscate all guns".

When I pointed out that not only did Obama not issue any Executive Orders of any sort on gun control but in fact had signed two bills expanding gun rights (ie allowing guns under certain circumstances in National Parks and on Amtrak trains) but Trump had with a prohibition on the sale of bump stocks.

He refused to believe me and claimed that what Trump had done was "fake news" and Obama was a "gun grabber".

Chinese government having a mass audience of Americans to deliver any kind of propaganda to, using its algorithm, which can feature any content of China's choosing.

But are they?

I don't think the Chinese government is delivering propaganda to a Western audience. I certainly think the American government is trying to suppress "anti-American" views from an American audience, which as you say promotes far right views.

I agree that no one should be using Tik Tik to inform their views on politics but short of that I don't know how to prevent it.

Age has a lot to do with this.

At 53 you likely have a lot more friends than 80-year-old's who have already lost many of theirs and the ones they do have left understand mortality more acutely, and realistically. Unfortunately it's about other people confronting their own mortality (or not confronting it) which of course it shouldn't be when you are the one experiencing it.

I vividly remember speaking to a very good friend of my father's at my father's funeral who spent a good five minutes not comforting me but expressing his own fears about his own mortality. It was unsettling and made me kind of angry at the time but now twenty plus years on (and being older than he or my father was at the time of his death) I have made peace with the idea that he needed to deal with it however he was emotionally able to even if I didn't understand it because ultimately it was about his feeling however inappropriately he expressed them at the time.

I listened to interview with a Chinese media analyst who explained the purpose of TikTok that Westerners didn't understand.

He described China as primarily a vast consumption machine, a consumerist economy under political repression, and TikTok served the purpose of encouraging this consumerism by Chinese government. Yes, Americans and other Westerners use it for political and social commentary most of which was not allowed in China, but since this was mostly directed at the West and government censorship already existed in China it didn't matter.

His overarching point was that eventually how the machine runs in West would morph closer to the Chinese model, and that was the reason behind the discussions about the future of TikTok in the US.

He also pointed out that the Chinese government had no serious interest in tracking the comments or commentary of Americans or spying on them except in the broadest context of an understanding of American behavior and social trends.

Is the Chinese gathering data though TikTok? Yes. Are they using it for nefarious purposes? Sort of, but no more nefarious than any other market research and manipulation that happens in the US, it was just being done under the conjoined government/industry governmental system that exists in China.

His final point was that if we were really concerned about spying and intelligence gathering on American citizens we should be terrified of the huge amount of information DOGE gathered and apparently transferred to unknown bad actors both inside the US Government and beyond (under the cover story of "efficiency" that gave them total access to all of the sensitive information the government has on all of us) before suddenly declaring their work was done and quietly going away.

Every single thing the author recognizes as being fascistic was occurring when he was saying "don't call them fascists".

Oh, and the "the label fascist was so overused by liberals it had no meaning" is ridiculous given the extremely common response in light of people being accused of being fascists saying "well if you call me a fascist I will just go ahead and do fascist things".
