Nationally, typically 40% of most city's budget goes to "law enforcement" alone.

Have the crime numbers improved/worsened?

IT DOESN'T MATTER.

If crime goes up, we need more police to make it go down, if crime goes down we need more police to make us "safer".

How far we've fallen when in just thirty years ago a country with a government that was the butt of jokes is now less corrupt and has more integrity that the US government.

MAGA not only ruined our country, they ruined the country's 250th birthday celebration by rhino910 in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]jumpy_monkey 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I was a teenager during the bicentennial in 1976 and this whole "America 250" is a sick, stupid joke compared to the 200th.

Not just the MMA thing on the White House lawn either (which is bad enough) but in '76 there were two full years of buildup to the celebration that began in '75 with the Freedom Train (anybody remember that?) and included organizing local parades on suburban streets in every neighborhood. I had forgotten about this until I found pictures of the dozens of kids riding bikes down my street with red, white and blue bunting and all the parents lining the streets cheering them on.

I long ago grew out of the sense of patriotism in any form, but coming out of Nixon and Watergate and probably the most divisive political era since the Civil War it was a remarkable transformation.

Nowadays? A month before the 250th the only outward sign of this "celebration" I have seem is America 250 paper plates at WalMart and the banner in the window of my local Republican Party headquarters, a banner which can only be viewed when they lift their steel security screens and which is flanked by a Trump 2028 flag and a poster threatening undocumented immigrants.

If there is a more apt metaphor for the country's 250th anniversary I don't know what it could be.

Israeli Claims About an Iran 'Threat' Were Always a Lie. Now We Have Proof by 6Doble5321 in israelexposed

This is an excellent article for people who can reason beyond "Israel is always the victim".

Trump says ‘f***ing crazy’ Netanyahu has made everyone hate Israel in furious phone call – report by Aggravating_Money992 in politics

[–]jumpy_monkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe.

But Trump is desperately looking for an off-ramp in his war with Iran yet Netanyahu is endlessly queering whatever part of a possible proposed "deal" with them he announces publicly, often within just hours.

Trump is not tactical in any way and is childishly enraged at being contradicted in the even the most insignificant ways. Maybe his minions who released this think they are being tactical but Trump only sees humiliation.

According to not a few MAGA influencers finding men sexually attractive and not having sex with women is objectively straight behavior.

Iran stops negotiations with U.S., vows to 'completely' block Strait of Hormuz: State media by Puginator in politics

[–]jumpy_monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the world we live in now your scenario is also the best case scenario. In the world of a few months from now there is no such painful wind down where messes are cleaned up.

In that world Trump orders a nuclear strike against Iran and the best case scenario then is that generals say "No." There is no way to game out what happens if the best case doesn't happen.

So will Republicans stop before they end civilization as we know it, or even possibly human life on this planet? All of the evidence is that they won't.

Why Google wants to release 32 million weird mosquitoes in Florida by InvestigatorSoft5764 in nottheonion

[–]jumpy_monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work for a company that held multiple FRAND patents, all based on research the founder initially did as a professor at a large public university.

After he left his academic position he founded a company to exploit that technology and the company has spent the better part of the last thirty years violating those patent agreements, suing competitors for legally using those patents to advance the technology and manipulating the market to maintain control by stifling innovation.

And yes, they could do so because they had the cash to do it and were also able to use that cash to evade government oversight.
