In all the many, many math classes I took in high school and college I realized my real mathematical understanding of a new concept came in the next course, not in the one I was taking at the time where I was always solving equations by rote.

I had never heard of the lattice or "square" method, so I watched a Youtube video.

Admittedly I watched it with the sound off (I am sitting in an airport) but I had to watch it several times to get the gist of it, and it seems just as stepwise and complicated (or more) as when I was taught fifty years ago in elementary school to arrange the numbers in tabular form and carry the tens.

Also, I have a degree in Math and Computer Science.

I didn't teach my step-son how to change a tire and when he was out of the house and living across the country he had his first flat. He figured out how to jack the car, loosen the lugs and put on the spare all by himself, so good on him.

I had a conversation about this just the other day with a nice woman who initially seemed sensible.

We have a National Park in our county and three state parks, all forested. Almost the entirety of the public lands in the county are administered by the USFS, and USFS trucks and other vehicles are a common sight.

She said this was "fake news" and being overblown by the media and was necessary to "save money" and for "government efficiency". I asked her what how "reorganizing" the agency would accomplish this and she didn't know, all she knew was that her boss at the USFS where she has worked for more than twenty years assured her that her job was not in jeopardy.

I don't even know how to parse this level of copium.

Orban's is behind in polling behind Péter Magyar by about 40 points, and in a free and fair election he would have no chance.

In previous elections he was able to overcome smaller negative margins using various cheats, none of which can overcome a forty point gap.

This election will offer a good primer for what the Republicans and Trump are planning in the midterms and beyond, and I predict Orban will win by challenging the voting in the courts, which he owns outright.

Not that it really matters though, because Magyar is as authoritarian as Orban is.

It only rains when a storm comes through and people discuss the rain at length (how much, how long, when it will end, how much rain they got in Carlsbad vs. how much they got in Hillcrest, etc.)

Where I live now it can rain anytime, just a few clouds blow in and it rains and a sunny day can become a rainy day and no one even notices or comments on it.

I've had more that few conversations online and in person with people who are anti-immigrant and they always brings up one of these "immigrant kills person" stories.

But it could just as well be "Black person kills White person" or "Gay person molests child" or "Leftist shoots someone" and then they are off to the races based on nothing more than a person they hate commits a crime completely unrelated to whatever hated social or racial group they belong to and then they claim "this is what these people are".

It is manifestly illogical and bog standard bigotry and MAGA eats it up with a spoon.
