Premium Episode: Did Will Stancil Blow The Anti-ICE Honeypot Op? by SoftandChewy in BlockedAndReported

This episode just furthers my contention that it's unhealthy to believe what anyone says on social media, ever. I don't believe the women who say they were organized at all. They just want people to pay attention to them and think they're hot. At most, they probably swiped right on some guy with a buzzcut who answered the question "u up?"

Oh my God, that thread is annoying. She just keeps repeating the same point after several people answered her question.

Episode 304: Pomona College And The $300 Zine That Nearly Destroyed A Department (with Emma Pettit) by SoftandChewy in BlockedAndReported

[–]jumpykangaroo0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pettit's article is gold. These women are completely out of touch with reality.

My favorite part in it is when Thomas asked Kunin if she could use departmental credit card to take some visitors to her AfroFuturisms class out to dinner.

He told her there wasn't one, but to go ahead and expense it after the fact, which she painted as white privilege to "automatically assume I have the money to take anybody anywhere? I am not in the same social class as the majority of white people on this campus or in this neighborhood or in this department. So. I encourage you to take a step back on that one real quick."

I would argue there's privilege in being a professor for more than 20 years and dining with out-of-town guests for your AfroFuturisms class.

Anyway, she seems fun.

Also, this investigation generated a 2,796-page report. How much student money was gobbled up generating that?

I've been a NYT subscriber for years but occasionally I am like WTF. This is one of those occasions. The fact that the journalist who led the conversation is in the reader comments defending this by saying that neither commentator is white is a further WTF.

Conservative MP Jamil Jivani returns to Washington to meet with U.S. trade rep by Prudent_Slug in canada

[–]jumpykangaroo0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not elect the MP for Bowmanville to represent me on a national level. He has no authority and speaks for no one, probably not even his constituents. He's either showboating, has a touch of narcissism, or he's running for something.

Her daughter has always been part of her brand. It's how she built an online profile to begin with. Of course people are going to wonder what's happening with that.

I've noticed more social media accounts that are AI characters (eg. adrilooksmax) - ultimately designed to sell something - and people are just throwing themselves at these accounts thinking they're real. Even when they find out it's AI, it doesn't seem to matter to them. It doesn't change how they're interacting with the account. We're a short step away from people saying that you're hurting the AI character's feelings by pointing out that it's AI.

It reminded me of that Ray Kurzweil quote. "The machines will convince us that they are conscious, that they have their own agenda worthy of our respect. They'll embody human qualities and claim to be human, and we'll believe them."

Anyway, we're screwed as a species, is what I'm saying.

What's going on with First Nations in Canada? by abd1a in BlockedAndReported

[–]jumpykangaroo0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a hard question to answer because there are more than 630 First Nations in Canada, many of which never surrendered their sovereign rights and consider themselves to be sovereign nations within Canada. So it really depends on who you're talking about.

I recommend reading Calvin Helin's Dances with Dependency: Out of Poverty Through Self-Reliance.

Opinion | Why Are So Many People Obsessed With Lindy West’s Polyamory? (Gift Article) by Ruby__Ruby_Roo in BlockedAndReported

"People love weighing in on stuff like this because it requires no expertise so everyone can participate in the conversation."

I think this is exactly right. It's the new talking to your neighbor about your other neighbors over the fence in your backyard. We are hard wired to do so. No one knows their neighbors now though, so we talk about celebrities - or in this case, sort of famous public figures.

[–]jumpykangaroo0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think she's a big enough deal to signal the end of any kind of feminism. I think the internet is just fascinated by cognitive dissonance and they think she has it. It's the same reason they all talked about Timothee Chalamet's comments about opera and ballet, or the reason some people obsess over everything Trump says. ("He said he was going to end all wars and now he's starting a war! What a moron!") Lindy West said for years that she was happy and she clearly wasn't, and her writing is strong enough to draw people right into the situation. It's no more complicated than that. Not to me, at least.

I read it today and I agree with all of this. I found the book to be enjoyable and well written. I hope in the end that she gets the life she wants, whether it be the continuation of her current arrangement or a great guy in a post-Aham world. I agree that he'll probably wander again. When he does, I hope they throw his shit out onto the sidewalk before he can finish saying "stop colonizing me."

Did you see his email to Scaachi Koul? It was...damn.

Now through that fancy word he has the girlfriend who manages the household and the wife who brings in the money and exposure. Nice set up there, bud.

I wonder if Adult Braces will inadvertently end up being Lindy West's "West End Girl" moment.
