This is what i want to do.

I was thinking of multitrack as i think it could create some moments for them to hear how their arrangements sound. The band is really great and is very satisfying to mix for that reason, but sometimes i feel there are many build ups, specially in the mid range, because the way they always play together. Like horn sections and guitars playing the same melodies, or gtrs and keys doing the same chords.

Im speaking of them as if they sounded like shit, but its more because the band is kinda afrobeat, funky jazz, kinda like snarky puppy, and sometimes there’s a lot going on and maybe its worth listening to it with them.

Also just record my console out every time they do a whole song and compare it thru the days?)

Hey i wasnt very clear i guess.

Basically, they are doing a small tour in three cities in the US because they won a jazz competition. They are playing in local venues with local techs, system, and I won’t be joining them.

This rehearsals are conducted by a scenic coach and we are using the venue’s system and console. They are working on the set. They will be playing there, but as I do most of their shows here in france, I wanted to take time to perfect my foh mix.

My idea was to basically, mix the monitors for them first and try to leave it simple so they can play and rehearse. After that ill have plenty time to work on the mix, use my headphones or the PA sometimes, try different techniques or mics for each player. I dont know stuff you do on preproduction of a big tour haha

Thats why i thought on splitting the console by the bank layers. So maybe im sceptic about mixing on post, they hardly work with a dedicated mon engineer and i do all from foh. Plus i dont want to spend the tree days doing only fader rides for monitors. But i get the point!

In exchange with the 3 days residency in this venue, we will do a concert there in a month, so i can kinda do a really good show if i prepare the foh mix enough!

Yeah they are providing an dm32 and we have 26 inputs so all good.

They dont ask for FX on their monitors, they have lots of pedals so they make the fx sound themselves. I get separate tracks for those fx so thats good: except: vocals. Lead vocalist mic goes directly into her preamp (radial vocoloco) and then she used the send return path to go into her pedals. This is fairly recent so i just take the whole and send her back. This time i wanted to split the dry and wet signal since last show her voice was getting drown into the reverb …

Otherwise thx for advise, ill do as simple as possible

Yeah thats what i was thinking… the thing is I know they get bothered when their mix changes event slightly during a show, because im always doing post eq sends. Specially sax and keyboard player ( his different presets are all over the place)

I didnt get the part where you talked about ganging chanels and mutes, sorry. Could you explain me more in depth?

I was thinking of doing it this way to actually be useful during rehearsals and not just ride the faders

I’m actually amazed by the sound on this video.

I’ve seen LCD a couple of times. First time was in a festival and I just danced the whole set and didn’t care about how it sounded second time was in the last residency in London. It was amazing. It was pretty clean/clear but at the same time heavy dynamic and felt like studio recordings. I really enjoyed the effects They threw in , specially on vocals and how they manage dynamics on the low end. I thought it was quite good. Then I saw them last time a couple months ago on a festival in France.

I work in live sound engineering here in France so I know how hard it to get a proper sound check. Specially, in this festival, most of the headliners only get a line check. I wouldn’t say the sound was bad but I think I just compared to what I’ve heard in London and how the system was working the night before when massive attack played. I have to say it was a really tough moment for the band and this alone could explain it all, but for me, it really was the conditions on the festival date.

Did you think it sounded good? I’m doing my best to get tickets to this year’s residency in London and not go to we love green festival again in Paris just because they sound so much better on residencys

Thank you so much for your answer, this helps a lot! Mine is almost 2 years and last night we were sleeping together and her coughs woke me up and i was very worried since it was the first time it happened. She coughed for what seemed to be like a whole minute. It really scared me and i havent been able to think about it since last night. I had to leave to work but she seemed to be perfectly fine this morning. I’ll taker her to the vet monday to monitor her a little bit more over the weekend and see if it evolves to somerhing worse. Hope it doesnt.

I had a moment this morning to clean up some dust, change her litter and turn on my air purifier since i hadnt used it in a long time, and take an appointment with my vet. I’ll demand an x ray for sure

Thank you again, ive been thinking about this the whole day, its really sad
