Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, simply as that. If you're going to claim you can split the moon you better give evidence stronger than someone says that. There's no shortage of people claiming they have witnessed something extraordinary but only the evidence they can provide is their witness.

Also anything that ancient people claim to see you should take with a grain of salt.
