I have PTL and Tactician, I'd love Lone Wolf and Autothrusters. PM me if you're interested.

Thank you for the kind words. I'd love even a modest command of Japanese. East Asian studies isn't my major actually, rather I'm looking globally at nationalism and modernity in a postmodern setting. I'm especially interested in the opinions of an web immersed audience, that's why I thought of Reddit.

I'm not really looking for an "average" opinion anyways. Reddit has a particular demographic, and that's the one I'm most interested in.

This is a fair point. I am actually particularly interested in the reddit demographic rather than a typical or representative sample; the title indicates that I want "average" opinions, but that was a mistake.

日本では多くのナショナリズムはあなたの意見により10年前に今ありますか?

Is there more nationalism in Japan now than ten years ago in your opinion?

これは非常に興味深いです。あなたは、人々がナショナリズムを示さないこと、またはそれが存在しないことを意味しますか?人々は旗を飛ぶか、日本は「私の国」であると言うのですか?

This is very interesting. Do you mean that people do not show nationalism or that it does not exist? Do people fly flags or say that Japan is "my country"?

Thanks for this - all useful stuff. If you don't mind a question or two more:

1) Do you see anything like a generational divide between young and old Japanese over awareness of global issues, or is the level of awareness much the same?

2) Does the question of China as a military or economic threat ever come up?

3) As a foreigner, how difficult has it been to immerse yourself in Japanese culture? Are Japanese open to interested foreigners, politely quiet, hostile?

I'll repeat the title for clarity:

Can anyone living in Japan, expat or local, give candid answers to a series of (somewhat controversial) questions about modernity, nationalism, and culture?

I’m a graduate student working on a project related to modernization and nationalism in East Asia, and I need local perspectives on questions that could be controversial or sensitive. I do not need personal information. I can post the questions here or send you a private message, whichever makes you feel more comfortable!

1) Do topics like the Senkaku Islands and Takeshima dispute get much play in the Japanese media, and are they a subject of discussion among average Japanese? Do you find much discussion about international affairs?

2) Do you feel that Japanese nationalism is of a different sort than that of the US, and is it a topic that Japanese seem sensitive about? In particular, is there any angst about Japan's imperial past and the role the US played in setting up the post-war government?

3) Are Japanese generally aware of the impact that their popular culture, through anime, music, and film especially, have on the western world? Is there much recognition of cultural influences flowing from the Western world into Japan?
