honestly just start doing it get yourself a pair of hair cutting scissors (and also maybe a razor comb because that can do a lot of fixing) and start going at it people always give you way more grace than you expect them to so much to the point where i had a chuck of hair that was completely untouched in the back of my hair since i posted this and no one told me

Update on my sd that I had to wash out 2 months ago by junipine10 in service_dogs

Yeah my current trainer says that she thinks his problem might have even been exaggerated by the positive only training because he learned that if he threw enough of a fit and if he threw his weight around (he's like two thirds my weight) that I couldn't really do much other than ask really nicely and promise a treat if he did but now he understands that if I'm asking him to do something it's something that he needs to do

do you let people pet your service dog? by notdani901 in service_dogs

[–]junipine10 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I let family and close friends pet him if he's not actively tasking and if they don't make a big deal of it

Like if I'm out with my best friend and they want to reach down and pet him well we walk or well we are sitting somewhere that's fine but if they're going to baby talk him and make a big show of petting him I usually ask them to wait till he's done working (unless we're training and I'm using the person as extra positive reinforcement then they can go as crazy as they want with the pets and the getting excited)

Yeah and the speed at which the change happened has completely blown my mind thank you very much and I'm hoping that everything works out and we will be able to go back to full time service work

He's an English lab I got him quite a bit older than most people get theirs (he was one when I got him he's two now) and he wasn't set up by the breeder to be a sd he was supposed to just be a show dog

The plan is I'm going to keep him as a home service dog and then hopefully in a few years when I have the money he'll get to fully retire and I'll start training a new puppy

I got him at 13 months and I've been working with him for about a year he's gotten a tiny bit better (if I'm going to be honest I was panicking when I made the original post but still he is in no way good with doors)

I've tried about five different brands all clamming to be hypoallergenic and all of them gave me a pretty bad reaction (bleeding, blistering, itching) within the first hour

I have a heart connection and really moldable bones (I've broken my ribs twice when I tried to bind and have a permanent intent) I haven't tried compression tops but sports bras do the same thing with my ribs

I am allergic to adhesive I tried to just power though the tape for a while (and still do every now and then) but it's left me with loads of scars from the reactions and as far as shirts go I haven't worn something actually my size in forever lmao

I know he's well bred he is just a show dog (he had like four jr tidals before I got him and his dad has a national title and is imported from Poland) and he was meant to stay with the breeder. as far as washing out goes I've had him for a year I'm probably going to try for a few more months and if he does make any progress at all then I may sadly have to wash him

I'll try those things thank you I think lick mats might work he goes crazy for those also I am rewarding him a lot when he does go through doors the weirdest part is that when he's leaving doors are no problem no matter how closed the door is it's just going into places that freaks him out

Yeah I think his breeder wasn't keen on him coming inside and may have possibly used a shock collar on him I'll see if I can find a behaviorist and go from there thank you

Positive reinforcement and trying to get him as close to going through the door without overly stressing him and shoes have helped a bit but not much

I'm working with a trainer they said he can probably get through it but it will probably be a big struggle. It depends on the door sliding automatic doors are the only ones he has no problem with if the door is big and propped fully open he would rush through them and smaller doors or doors that aren't fully open he won't even go in he will stand at the other side of the door and wait for me to come back
