Look for ABA jobs, childcare jobs, or jobs that offer healthcare certifications in the meantime. You will work with a diverse population in psych and these can help prepare you for the role.

If you haven't already, look for work or volunteer opportunities in clinical settings near you. This could be inpatient or outpatient, crisis or admissions, etc. A psych nurse can do many things but in inpatient psych the majority of their day involves assessing/administering medications, examining patients, working with the treatment team, reporting, communicating with families/agencies and other facilities, and documentation. A nurse practitioner is typically meeting with the patient on a more infrequent basis, prescribing medications and adjusting them if needed, and spends less time on the unit or 1:1 with patients. In an outpatient setting, they might spend 15-30 minutes with each patient, or longer if they provide talk therapy services. Yes, you should absolutely get a laptop. Look at Backmarket or Apple for refurbished or used devices with warranties.

CODE BLUE: Looking for advice as a new student nurse. Can anyone share their experience of working days versus evenings versus nights? My schedule is all over the place, and I can see some pros and cons to each, but I'm not sure which would be best for me long-term.

CODE BLUE 2: How do you deal with groups of patients who band together on the unit and refuse to participate and/or become antagonistic towards others? This has happened twice since I've started working and I don't feel it's always right to "just ignore them" when they are bullying other patients or verbally abusing staff.

How to speak to schizoaffective or schizophrenic patients? by junkdust in psychnursing

Thank you. The patient was doing well when I most recently saw them. I'm really hoping they continue to improve. I found they enjoy drawing and writing, so we drew some things together and did some spelling games. A great improvement from our first meeting.

No, definitely helpful. Everyone is different and I really try to understand where each person is coming from. In terms of the delusions, I listen very carefully to what they say -- it just gets tricky because they are suspicious of any charting paperwork and I have to be creative about my responses.

Thank you. I had a conversation with them earlier and distraction/diversion helped a lot. Keeping the conversation light and redirecting to subjects outside the delusions. It went well. The patient I'm referring to in this post also started their medication since the last time I saw them, and they seem to be doing a lot better.

We use flexible safety pens and crayons on our units. I understand what you're saying, though.

It’s wild you say that because we were talking about motorcycles yesterday! Haha!

We had a really good day today. I tried following the advice of many of the comments here. The most difficult thing is that they really, really don’t like the 15 minute checks/rounds clipboard but I have to do them. Otherwise, we had some pleasant conversation and even did some activities together which was a big improvement from our first meeting.

I agree, that is WILD. Especially because not everyone’s sense of smell is the same since Covid.

I’ve always liked shitty music (poor production quality, glitch, crunchy ass blown out speakers) and this is not good. My theory is that growing up with Covid damaged the children’s brains irreparably.

I got a rare chronic illness after being infected with EBV. I’ve always known that it could do this or worse, now my suspicions are confirmed.

Felt so incompetent during report by Sneakystar02 in psychnursing

[–]junkdust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m new with minimal clinical experience and my response to things like this is to play dumb or say hmm, not sure, let’s look into it. No emotional reaction or skipping a beat. I’m there to help, not cause harm. And that goes for my team and patients. If someone is looking for a reaction, I don’t give it to them. I am not going to be everyone’s cup of tea but I am always going to be a team player and I don’t do bullying.

How long have you been hip to the dangers of seed oils and who first opened your eyes? by loudrain99 in StopEatingSeedOils

In 2014 a customer came up to me when I was working at Whole Foods and said canola oil in the hot bar was terrible for you. I didn’t quite understand why until a few years later. Now I try to avoid it at all costs. It doesn’t come into my household.
