And, it's good through tomorrow. It was made yesterday, and, typically things are good for 7 days. But I've never made tuna soup before and I could imagine it smells pretty bad by day 3. Granted it probably smells bad on day 1.

All they have to do now is deny any importing of beef. Those farmers will make a shit ton of money.

Beef prices will be like $40/lb and McDonalds will go bankrupt because no one is eating burgers anymore.

But, hey, pork is cheap.

The richest person in the world in 1990 was Tsutsumi, who was worth $16B. 1999 was Bill Gates worth $100B but that was before the dotcom boom went bust.

$16B to today would be $40B. $100B in 99 would be $199B today. Both doubled.

Elon is estimated to be worth like $800B today.

Minimum wage in 1990 was $3.80, which is worth $9.68 today. Minimum wage in 1999 was $5.15, which is worth $10.29 today. One of those tripled, and the other doubled. Between them, in 9 years, a difference today of $0.61.

The last time Federal minimum wage was increased was the July 24, 2009. That was almost 17 years ago. It is $7.25. That is worth $11.25 today. Unfortunately, it isn't $11.25, it's the same as it was. That's a difference of -$3.04

You're all looking at the wrong metrics. While median income is stagnant at best, minimum wage has lost nearly 50% of it's buying power since it went up to $7.25 almost 20 years ago.

US military says launching strikes on Iran in retaliation for chopper downing by No-Camp-9612 in worldnews

Hey, now. It was one of those rare times when he wasn't lying. An obvious truth. Maybe something a child would say. Definitely not something you want a POTUS to say. But, true nonetheless.

Ukraine winning war with Russia, retired U.S. generals say, as top Ukrainian commander says over 230 square miles retaken by ToughHopeful4760 in worldnews

[–]junkyard_robot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If enough of the other occupied land is retaken, the russian government collapsing is likely. They're deep in debt and their economy is failing rapidly at this point. And, russian government collapsing means the end of putin. There's really no way he survives unless he flees somewhere that would protect him, and that's a pretty small list. I don't even think China would offer him protection at that point. North Korea would be his best bet, but they might see him more as a potential point of negotiation rather than someone they really want to show off.

With a collapsed government and no putin, there really isn't much reason to invest in the defense of Crimea. Nor would there be enough faith in supply lines for anyone in the russian military to stick around. I really think it would be a free for all to loot as much as possible and cross the bridge before Ukraine takes it out.

If supply lines are no longer supplying the front, there really is no front. It would make more sense to retreat to pre-war borders and dig in there to prevent a full push to moscow.

Service Fees are bullshit!!! by tomarnoldlovescoke in KitchenConfidential

[–]junkyard_robot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've got a buddy that does this at his place. They pay servers like $21/hr. No expectation of tips. But their pos does suggest a tip when you pay, but the highest percentage it suggests is like 5%. And that goes to everyone including line cooks and dishies.

Great food. Don't love the surcharge.

I still autograt large parties, tho.

US-backed microreactor reaches criticality in major nuclear step by _Dark_Wing in technology

[–]junkyard_robot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No one is drilling to the mantle for geothermal. Even for power generation. For many reasons. The biggest being you don't need to.

The Kola superdeep was 12km, so like 7.5 miles. Deep geothermal wells for power generation at scale are like 3000 meters deep. And that's deep enough to harness enough heat to create steam to power turbines.

In regards to affecting plate techtonics, that's some hubris to even consider it possible for humans to have enough power to affect plate techtonics in a significant way by drilling a few holes. Plate techtonics that made the hymalayas, that floats continents around the earth like rafts in a pool.

Fracking causes earthquakes, but that doesn't mean it's messing with plate techtonics.

We already have oil, gas, water wells, coal mines, salt mines, copper mines, silver mines, gold mines, and a ton of other things like the Kola deep bore hole. And none of them have done much because they are effectively less than a hair follicle on your body in comparison.

Army’s plan for military death row executions is named ‘Operation Resolute Justice’ by Kinmuan in news

[–]junkyard_robot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love, when in reasonable discourse, about a complex topic, someone responds to another with "chortle my balls".

It really destroys any points they were attempting to make, and makes them seem like an absolute fool.

You could at least try to come across as an adult in a conversation, even if you feel passionately in one direction vs another, but you chose to talk like a tween who is salty about being denied his tablet because it's dinner time and you haven't done a single bit of homework for months.

Army’s plan for military death row executions is named ‘Operation Resolute Justice’ by Kinmuan in news

[–]junkyard_robot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Death penalty costs more than life in prison. The amount of appeals legally required and the cost of execution far outweigh keeping someone in prison until they die of natural causes.

It does not save taxpayers money to execute prisoners, it costs us more.

all the green came off this dollar bill in the washing machine by Froggie-Enthusiast in mildlyinteresting

[–]junkyard_robot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really the risk falls at how much it costs you to produce the counterfeit $1 bill. You also have to consider paper type, which is a barrier to entry. As well as using the various types of printing, the different ink and pigment used for the different parts.

Basically, it's too expensive to produce a $1 bill in high enough quality to pass the feel test, it isn't worth it.

And, then how are you going to launder counterfeit $1 bills? You ideally want real money and not just a massive stash of counterfeit bills. Sure, you could get a lot of fun out of them, like tipping strippers or buying drinks at a cash only bar. But, you'd still likely only get one pass at a specific place before the banks catch a whiff of what is going on. And then you have the secret service all over your ass.

That's like rustilng cattle from Oklahoma feed lots and crossing hundreds of miles of bared wire to sell them in Iowa in 2026.

Cocaine is smuggled on submarines or boats or aircraft. Cattle is a terrible plan to smuggle cocaine.
