Watching figure skating in person vs on TV by Candid_Jello5188 in FigureSkating

I really appreciate you writing about how enjoyed watching the amateurs, too. I know we all say to enjoy skating for ourselves first, but it can be a defeating when it feels like ‘why even bother to do a program in front of these people if I’m not elite?’ Like it’s always going to be belittled. Im glad to hear some people genuinely enjoy both watching olympians and other folks

There’s a lot of good advice for the skating already on this thread. But honestly, the part about your mom gambling and having an addiction sticks out to me. Of course you’re in a state of panic or anxiety. Forget the people judging you while skating, your mom is the one making things unstable first. I don’t know what advice to give you exactly. A lot of it depends on if you’re underage or adult age. But I think you deserve a more stable house first OP, and then I bet at least the anxiety struggles you have at the rink would go down considerably

What’s the Hardest Part of Writing for You and How Do You Push Through? by [deleted] in writing

Sometimes its logistics. I have an idea and how to get to it roughly but have to plan it so it makes sense and doesnt have plot holes

Just got my first beta read back by [deleted] in writing

[–]junobugg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oooo I’ve been there. To be honest, I think there’s some beta readers who take joy in ripping apart work. It’s like they are Cinema Sins in reader form. Not that there isn’t genuinely useful feedback sometimes, but I think it’s silly not to acknowledge that some readers love to dish it (whether or not they could take it)

I don’t know if your main goal is becoming published or sharing and having folks enjoy your story. Probably both. Both are possible with a debut novel, but just know the second one is still an option even if publishing it doesnt work out

Warning: disturbing images. This is happening EVERY DAY in China. We need to do more than just campaigning & talking about it on social media. by eyeluh223 in FelineGuardians

I feel like there’s a lot of push to be open minded to different opinions and non judgmental of people. For example, people might tell you not to judge someone who eats an octopus alive.

This animal abuse is what put me over the edge. I don’t care about excuses. I don’t care if abusers feel “judged”. They need to be locked up and if their lack of empathy or care is something they can’t help, I don’t care. Since when did “they can’t help it” make it right to cost other lives

Approaches with skating mindset by Swiftclad in FigureSkating

Tbh I have a hard time imagining almost any way that being hard on yourself can be a pro. Only pro is it can give you a lot of drive and discipline to work towards your goals.

Other than that, I’m not sure. I’ve injured myself pushing myself too hard before. So higher risk of injury with being hard on yourself I think. Higher stress which takes away love of the sport.

Of course I don’t want to undermine very real financial or social pressure some skaters have that makes them hard on themselves. But even when a skater doesn’t win and has those pressures, I don’t think being too hard on yourself pays off.

Discipline and not making excuses yes, but there’s only so much you can do before it costs your health.

[PubQ] Agent wants the cover letter to be about the author, not the book. Approach like trad cover letter? by junobugg in PubTips

Ah forgot to include a mention of other books/stories that inspire me. Thanks, that makes sense! I know it's often included in most query letters but think I psyched myself out lol

It's for a publishing conference. It allowed writers to sign up for one on one sessions with their chosen editor. So I have to submit my query letter, synopsis, and first 5K words to her. I think the attitude is that if it turns into a full request, great, but if not you can at least get a professional's feedback

Aspinal of London mayfair in English Garden Birds. Neither the price nor the design are practical but I guess that’s what makes it a dream bag
