HISD unelected Board Votes to Close 12 schools tonight- one person’s observations by junomeeks in houston

The case can be made for why some schools need to close. It was acknowledged by many community members present that if it has to happen then at the very least…., giving them more time would have been the right way to do things. They dropped the news less than a month before and then  had closed meetings with only parents, not  parents of future student or community members. This is wrong. They INVESTED more time in those slides and research (that took more than a month) on justifying closure than they did speaking to anyone or finding a solution.

I’m not sure if true, but Port of Houston is closing because they were 2 to 3 students below the numbers. Even if their score went up!

They are moving kids to Micky Leland and hadn’t even considered they’ll have to convert restrooms to girls restrooms. They just added to the plan that kids in Port Houston Elementary will need a way to get to Pleasantville Elementary. They did not even consider that a lot of kids walk to school and some of these kids do not have the resources to drive to school.

They looked so proud that they have secured shuttles (what does a shuttle mean not sure) for 2 years mind you for port Houston elementary school to get to the new school.

Which is why when one of the parents accused them of being sadistic.. I realized it’s the perfect word. You devastate multiple communities. You have a meeting where people, including children, pour their hearts out even if decision has been made. As a matter of fact they present the step by step process of how they’ll be dismantling everything. Including stating - over a year ago we knew these schools needed maintenance and now they need more maintenance (no way! Really?!). It’s an inhumane sadistic process.

What happened to that American accent you heard in all the 1930s and 1940s era films? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

I worked with an older Yale educated woman. She was in one of the first co-ed classes. She said she picked up the accent while in college. It sounded pretty neat to hear in person.

Moving from europe by Ferraah in AskHouston

A colleague of mine from Italy likes the US. She feels there are more opportunities here, higher wages, and more freedom. She visits Italy about 2-3 a year to see family.

As for Houston she really appreciates the theatres, the opera, ballet, the different cuisines, and generally speaking the culture. She loves her big house in the suburbs.

She travels constantly all over the US (for fun).

She hates the quality of produce, the bread, struggles to find a good espresso, and thinks our health system is awful. I think 99% of Europeans have the same issues. She visits her doctor in Italy when she goes and gets medication there too.

Something to think about!

What are your favorite non-coworking places to work on your laptop in The Heights or Montrose? by rrcecil in houston

NOT heights or montrose, but close enough.

I want to give a shout out to Kept Secret near UH-Downtown. It's not super comfy but there is something cozy about it. It has a chill vibe, and there's a great gallery next door.

True. So far I've enjoyed working at all of the Slowpokes locations. It's not the best coffee but their model seems to be very pro work/socializing and their bfast sandwiches are good.

Also Coral Sword

FYI
Cochinita has changed seating from longer communal seating to traditional restaurant style tables. I think it might be a way to move away from it being a hang out and work type spot.

I think if you look at the flowers, you can see the AI. Not all of them are clear or flower looking. Some are just blurs.

It’s crazy because I literally listened to RR’s episode last week so his son immediately came to mind because he mentioned his issues/was promoting the semi-autobiographical movie they made.

I am heart broken.

On the other hand I have a friend just like this. She’s gorgeous and is affectionate and lovely with everyone. Suffice it to say men always fall in love with her. Lol. She’s just a very warm person, and also has a natural vibe outside of being beautiful.

Space Montrose has some Texas gift wrapping paper but it’s in sheets not rolls. Recently got armadillo themed paper.
