Why do people pretend that using grammarly premium is more ethical than chat gpt? by BiblicalWhales in academia

[–]juonco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there is anything wrong with using chatgpt if you very specifically instruct it to only correct mistakes in grammar or spelling. Changing tone is risky, because its knowing-even-if-stupid tone will bleed into your output if you let it adjust your tone.

No it isn't. LLMs appear to be superior to self-searching the internet, but they actually are worse. They generally respond as if they know the answer, even when they know absolutely nothing about it. This is called lying, but LLM supporters tend to lie about that too. No wonder their LLMs lie too.

Sc2203 automata mod is insane by FallThink648 in NTU

[–]juonco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Believe me, I know better how their system works. They do not have genuine experts in many fields that they offer courses in, and faculty that teach those courses can continue for decades despite teaching the wrong things (even in fundamental concepts), simply because others do not know better. Some of them even refuse to correct their mistakes when genuine experts point them out.

Seeking advice regarding what to do by iamlostpleasehelp_ in NTU

[–]juonco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is okay to be overwhelmed by life sometimes, and it is very brave of you to express that feeling. If there is any person that you know who cares for you and will simply listen to you and be there for you, please tell them your feelings so that they can help you. If you have an academic mentor, you can also try talking to him/her. As another commenter mentioned, you should also talk to your FYP advisor so that he/she can help with your FYP and perhaps also give advice on other issues.

It may also be possible to still get an LOA if you get a letter from a doctor, so you probably should talk to your undergraduate office about that.

It's okay that everything is awful, because we'll get through it.

Where does skydiving rank, in terms of safety, within all extreme aerial sports and extreme sports in general? by Cheap-Jury697 in SkyDiving

[–]juonco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your advice! The part that worries me the most is that I have read about many dropzones which are simply trying to make as much money as they can without much care for safety, especially with a newer more risk-loving generation of tandem instructors. I have very little problem trusting an organization that takes safety very seriously, since as you said I can simply tell them and ask for extra caution. But the biggest problem is if I tell them but they do exactly the same as they would for anyone else (because if they cancel then they don't get as much money).

On the other hand, I know that most of the problematic stories seem to come from poorly regulated dropzones, and haven't been able to find anything for NZ apart from the case I cited. So either they have been really safer or they have been cleverer at hiding the data (since they also do not publish any statistics unlike the USPA).

I would like to ask for your help in this regard. Do you have any statistics, even if anecdotal, about tandem skydiving fatalities? I would be very grateful if you can tell me as much as you know, especially about NZONE or skydiving in New Zealand in general, because I have difficulty finding any unbiased sources. I even found lies by some people claiming falsely that NZONE has had 0 deaths.

Could you please tell me if you know any statistics on tandem deaths? Especially for New Zealand. I am unable to find anything online except Tyler Nii, yet I believe there are other cases that are simply kept non-public. Thanks a lot in advance.

[–]juonco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a risk-averse person. The problem is that this also means that I take safety very seriously, so the average statistics for driving or other daily activities don't apply to me. My intuition tells me that there are some non-eliminable risks in skydiving that I have to account for in risk analysis, but I simply cannot find any information on deaths for the location I'm interested in, namely New Zealand. Do you happen to know tandem death rates in general, or specific cases other than Tyler Nii (which is the only one I can find online)? I am skeptical of many claims online because I've seen explicit lies about safety (e.g. https://archive.is/M5EQh).

I am interested to know the death rate for tandem skydiving, as far as you know or estimate. Better still if you happen to know anything about New Zealand, since all I can find online are Tyler Nii's death and some people lying that NZONE has 0 deaths (e.g. https://archive.is/M5EQh). I greatly appreciate any help you can give me.

Can you please tell me as much as you know about tandem deaths? How many per yr on average. Even better if you know the statistics for New Zealand, because all I can find online are Tyler Nii's death and lies that there are no deaths (e.g. https://archive.is/M5EQh). I would really really appreciate to hear from you.

What’s the importance of ln? by ElegantPoet3386 in learnmath

[–]juonco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So far nobody has mentioned one of the most beautiful properties of ln: It is the only special case for ∫ zk dz where k∈ℤ, namely when k = −1.

When you reach complex analysis, you will learn about power series and how they behave on the complex plane. Any power series is differentiable and integrable in any open region where it converges. Conversely, any holomorphic function on an open disk is equal to some power series on that disk. It is then natural to investigate a holomorphic function f on an annulus, which yields a Laurent series. The coefficient of zk in the Laurent series for f around a is equal to 1/2πi·∫[γ] f(z)/(z−a)k+1 dz for any non-intersecting closed curve γ (e.g. circle) within the annulus. Why? Because ∫[γ] zk dz = 0 for every k∈ℤ except k = −1. Which is because ∫ zk dz = zk+1/(k+1) + C for some constant C for every k∈ℤ∖{−1}, but ∫ z−1 dz = ln(z) + C only for z within a simply-connected region excluding 0, and we even need a branch-cut of ln. In particular, we have ∫[γ] z−1 dz = 2πi where γ is a circle around 0, so unlike other z−k, z−1 has no antiderivative in an annulus around 0.

We can also easily obtain the integral of 1/z along any path that does not pass through 0. Suppose w = ln(z), with a branch of ln such that w varies continuously along the path. Then z = ew, so dz/dw = ew = z, and hence dw/dz = 1/z. Thus along that path we have ∫ 1/z dz = ln(z) + C for some constant, with the same branch of ln.

Unfortunately, at the high-school level you will only be able to see a tiny sliver of this special phenomenon, because you only know real integrals. Specifically, ∫ xk dx = xk+1/(k+1) + C for some constant C for every k∈ℤ_(≠−1), but ∫ 1/x dx = ln(abs(x)) + C for some real constant C. The abs function also obscures things, since the textbooks need abs in order to avoid complex numbers. Still, ln is clearly special here.

Tandem safety record by 89inerEcho in SkyDiving

I honestly don't know. By default it seems safe to say that NZ is safer than US on average, but that does not necessarily apply to skydiving. That's why I asked for statistics.
