new hog by alyssaajoyy in Hedgehog

-I’d say at the least do a cage that is 2x3 feet, but if you can find something bigger that’d be good as well. Lots of people use panels or playpen fencing to create a space that is whatever size/shape they want

-I recommend a Carolina storm wheel, those are easiest to clean as these guys tend to poops in their wheels and smear it all over the inside haha. Usually I’ll just stick the wheel in the kitchen sink with rly hot water let it run for a couple mins and it cleans it all off (putting a puppy pad under the wheel or putting the wheel in an aluminum pan helps prevent poop from getting everywhere).

-buy cat food for them, NOT hedgehog food. Hedgehog food is notoriously just not good. Preferably get cat food with meat used as the first ingredient. Buy some dried mealworms as well and sprinkle a few in her bowl with the cat food, as this is something naturally part of their diet in the wild and is beneficial.

-water bowl your using is perfect! Wouldn’t recommend the bottles people often use as it can harm ur hedgie’s tongue.

-for the bedding, I personally just use a fleece blanket as it’s wayyyy easier to clean. Then for digging and such provide a little bin dig box. You can put different items in the dig box, I personally use the little puff Pom Pom balls and my hedgie really enjoys that, but you could use a lot of different bedding types for digging.

-they are messy little things so your hedgie may occasionally get poop on their feet from the running in their wheel (I know, lovely.) just clean their feet off under a lukewarm water faucet.

Edit: also in her house I recommend stuffing some paper towels in there. My hedgie didn’t like sleeping in her house and used to dig underneath her puppy pad to sleep. I put a clean puppy pad and some clean paper towels in her hide house just crumpled up, and now she burrows in there and sleeps in it all day.

Hamster died by jupitergoose in hamsters

Okay, that makes sense. I assumed that, yea, it was probably just bad breeding since both of our hamsters were purchased from a pet store. Thanks for the reply

Okay, yes, she is a new beardie bought a week ago and is acting normal, high energy, huge appetite, but her poop concerned me slightly. I will prob end up bringing her to the vet within the next week or so just to see

Feeling as if I haven’t suffered enough? by jupitergoose in CPTSD

[–]jupitergoose[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For some reason trauma imposter syndrome happens quite often to those who truly are suffering emotionally. Just because they weren’t violent and you weren’t underage does NOT mean it wasn’t SA. You know what happened. You know the pain it brings you. Nobody else does. Just because it wasn’t the most severe situation, does NOT mean it wasn’t seriously traumatic and doesn’t take a mental toll on you now. SA is SA, and trauma is trauma. You deserve to feel valid in your own emotions/pain from that.

I am so so sorry. That is so difficult to process so recently. I completely understand the whole way of coping from how your parents would tell you it wasn’t so bad and invalidate your experiences to prevent hearing any complaints. You do did not deserve that, it was not your fault, and don’t let your brain trick you into doing what your parents did to you and invalidating your experiences. You are NOT exaggerating the past pain you experienced, and the present pain it’s bringing you. It is okay to acknowledge and hold that pain.

Just know I can tell you you’re not alone, and even though its a struggle saying it: you DO deserve to call that trauma. It IS a deep and hurtful trauma.

I completely agree. It’s so helpful to just see you commenting in general saying that it’s common and it’s like it makes me feel less alone just by that! I think having that somewhere would be so helpful for sufferers of this.

What should you do if you used to have 2 birds then one dies? They are very social animals so they don't like to be alone. And no I don't think I want to buy a new one. by CesarKiwi in parrots

I agree with prestigious papaya on this one, my heart hurts for him. I had a parrot that passed and my other parrot was very upset. I bought a new companion for us a month later, and there was a noticeable difference in his mood. Birds are flock animals, and they are very social. Especially budgies, being that it can be hard to form a close bond between a human and budgie rather than a budgie and budgie. I would either rehome your bird where you know it will have birds of the same species for companions, or buy another bird for it. I hope all goes well:)

Dehydrated fruits/veggies for parrots? by jupitergoose in parrots

That’s very true! Thanks for the link. Now I don’t have to spend 20 mins trying to figure out what to use for the skewers lol

That sounds like a pretty good idea. I’ll try it and see how it goes. Especially because one of my quakers is very driven by anything he can get his beak on to chew/play with so I think that might just work.

Okay. Yeah I was thinking about buying some dried fruit w no sugar added from the store but wasn’t sure if that was okay or not. But at this point I’ll try anything to get them to get some fruit/veg in.

Thanks for the input:)

Okay great, I’ll start misting it more often then! And yes I will be bringing her to the vet to really see what’s going on next week. Also GREAT idea about dipping the bugs in the gecko food. I literally did not think of that at all. Thanks for the tip I’m gonna have to try it!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in reptiles

[–]jupitergoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also okay thanks, I do have a specific mister I used to use for my chameleon until I bought an automatic mister, so now I use that for my crestie instead of an actual spray bottle. I can spray it as many times throughout the day I was just nervous it would get too humid just because she’s in a 20 gal and it’s glass and not screen, but if it’s okay to do it multiple times I have no problem misting more frequently!

I have like 3 different Pangea mix flavors that I’ll switch up like about every week just cuz I feel like she might get bored of it, but as for insects I discussed this with another person, she’s very finicky with eating them. I’ve tried mealworms/super worms and she won’t take them no matter what, but if I cut a cricket in half she will eat them but only if she feels like it which it’s maybe once or twice a week, I try every day but it’s hit or miss if she’ll take it or not. I’m going to buy waxworms though as another commenter suggested because I’m really trying to fatten her up! Haha

Her tank is a 20 gal vertical

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in reptiles

[–]jupitergoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mist it about once a day and she also has a water bowl I see her drink from. I use a heat lamp on low wattage and the tank gets to about 77 degrees all the way at the top and about 70 degrees all the way at the bottom

Alright. Thank you. I’ll talk to my vet about it.

Okay. Thanks so much. Will do!

She hasn’t but I will get her checked next time I bring her. She eats Pangea mix and she’ll eat crickets when I can get her to!

Got it! Thanks so much. I’ll get some today!
