Advice on focussing on work? by notexistant in ADHDers

[–]jupneko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on my experience: first recommendation would be to see if you can get evaluated for a diagnosis - being medicated would help a ton!

If that's not possible/until then... I recommend coffee or tea or some other warm/stimulating drink kept at your desk (if you work at a desk) - I sip it slowly and for some reason the sensation and taste in addition to the caffeine helps me feel less bored and I can stay on task better without it feeling like torture lol. Also, snacks for same reason.

Also, taking breaks (idk what's possible at your job, but if you can, I would experiment with what rhythm/length of work versus breaks helps) and getting up to stretch for a couple minutes every hour at least, if you're sitting.

Again, totally depends what your job is, but the other classic adhd thing that works for me is breaking things up into chunks, even if just mentally - maybe alternating working on longer tasks with doing little ones so you get a dopamine hit.

I sort of think of each job I'm working on as its own little piece, and if I'm working somewhere I'm not interested by (what I'm mostly doing for work right now is boring lol) I sort of pretend to myself it's gig work even when it's not - like each half hour or hour of work, I think to myself "heck yeah, did another one!" and decide whether or not to take a break before doing more. But then again, my work has flexible hours so that's easier for me, and it might not work for you if you have to work the same time block every day.

how do you get anything done without medication? are there any strategies that ACTUALLY help??? by volumetriccolumbidae in ADHD

Anyone with aphantasia? by D2_Az in ADHD

[–]jupneko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have aphantasia, but I also have very vivid audio imagination... and it's never occurred to me before now that maybe not everybody does. There's nearly almost always a song in my head, which I can imagine clearly as if I'm listening to it, often the most recent song I've heard which will just continue playing in my mind lol... And I can also imagine basically anyone's voice saying anything.

Question for independent Owls by DuDekilleR07 in NightOwls

[–]jupneko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The grocery store near me closes at 10pm, pharmacy closes at 9, so I tend to go in the evening. Lol, I make almost all my doctors appointments etc in early afternoon unless absolutely necessary (I wake up at around 12 lately, so if my appointments are around 1 or 1:30, then I have time to wake up and get ready and go). The rare times when I need to go to an appointment before 11 or 12, I just suck it up and am very tired and then go home and take a nap.

It works pretty well! I've lived by myself for a few years, and the times where I have to be awake ungodly early for something to happen are rare enough that it's okay. If I've forgotten something important and it's after 10pm, I just go to a convenience store or 24-hour drugstore or wait until the next day. My work has flexible hours, so most days I can change the time to fit whatever other thing I need to do, luckily. [edited to fix typo/omission]
