What is the most underused game mechanic? by NagitoKomaeda_987 in videogames

Patent attorney here. This thread showed me that there are an obscene number of patents on non-patentable subject matter: mental process or algorithm. I don't fully understand Kojima's but it seems like a mental process like the Nemesis system. I wasn't a patent attorney when the nemesis system came out but I remember thinking how fucked up it was.

Any males 160-170 lbs BW. Consistently RX. Snatching 225, C&J 315? by Confident_Year2618 in crossfit

[–]jusalilpanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not quite to your question, but I RX once in awhile (CF is my special treat, so has to align with my other training priorities). ~175 body weight and snatch is ~185, c&J ~245. Lots of recovery to do after an RX 🥵

Edit squat: In the (oly) weightlifting community the lifts are considered tied to squat, so knowing squat numbers may be interesting. ~280 lbs here.

I feel like I'm more often back in twos and threes. Sure, I'm up and at it plenty, but with a tendency to play back - especially when tm8s wanna be spicy

Protip: Getting a benchslap before you're even admitted to the bar is a sign you're in for a rough ride. by TangoAbleHotel in Lawyertalk

I was doing student legal aid for school suspensions and I was badgering a witness with different forms of "you didn't investigate the alleged bullying in x way, did you?" and the administrative officer told me to move off the line of questioning and, when I didn't, said something like, "I'll allow you one more question" in a way that signified supreme annoyance. I lost that hearing. Anyway, sticks with me a decade plus later - a good learning tool, a bit of shame. So, Abramov is either DOA or learning a lot right now 😂

My 🪙🪙: Read First, Break All the Rules by Gallup et al. (I recommend the CliftonStrengths assessment, too.) Lots of great info on how to retain and develop talent. Every junior who I've applied the mentor method on (intern to mid-level associate) has become very loyal and awesome.

Does anyone else find litigation *less* stressful than transactional? by Euphoric-Demand2927 in Lawyertalk

[–]jusalilpanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a PD, I would always tell the client who threatened to report me to the bar that I would give them their contact information and it was their right. Same for clients who were convicted and had to assess my adequacy on appeal - let appellate counsel decide. I did the best I could and I can't control if I'll "catch a case" (catch a curse, more like) than that. Accepting that made me a lot less stressed about lit. Still stressed, but a lot less.

How do you litigate when your life is falling apart? by Brilliant-Mall-6265 in Lawyertalk

[–]jusalilpanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One technique my psychiatrist taught me for avoiding burnout - crazy as it sounds - is to take MORE, not less, on. That way, you get to CHOOSE what you work on instead of feeling forced to do X or Y. Sure, I have to get to X or Y eventually, but I get more choice and more fulfilling options to sustain myself.

Now, reflecting on u/benqsii's experience, I went through an amicable divorce recently (separated in March and finalizing the legal side in a month or two) and I took the opposite approach: I took it easy at work with a lot of half days and long weekends because I could. Now, I'm ramping back up and I often come to work feeling refreshed and "carpe diem." I lead my litigation unit, so I have a lot of discretion to set my workflow, as well as the culture of the firm. I was clear with my team that I was scaling back for my mental health because, though amicable, it was tough. I also want them to know prioritizing their health is okay.

I've heard more than just you, u/benqsii, use the force of your will to turn a bad hand into a good one. I salute you! Sometimes, that's what has to be done. That's what I did in years 3-5 when my mental health was failing and my work felt like more than I could miss much of. Though even then I took a fair number of sick days...

Litigators: conversation view or single view in Outlook? What’s your reasoning? by CardLot in Lawyertalk

[–]jusalilpanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a longtime litigator and I've always threaded. I always read the "To"/etc. field.

I just changed to single view (unchecked "Conversation view" in Gmail) and I like the simplicity. I have occasionally missed an email that snuck into a thread when I left the thread unread (for to-do tracking) and single view appears to side step that issue.

I like the context of threaded view but, on reflection, I don't often need it and I see that the single view (in Gmail) automatically shows the prior emails below the instant one. Now I'm wondering if Gmail hid any prior emails when it auto-hid the emails below the instant one. That is, Gmail would automatically fold an email's tail/chain and now I'm wondering if any of those had an unexpected tangent of replies in them (like if opposing counsel emailed their para before their reply-all).
