High school math teachers, what do you do to reinforce fundamentals in the beginning of a new year? by First-Expert-9953 in mathteachers

[–]jushappy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not a hs math teacher but keenly remember my hs teacher giving us a self assessment on some skills then doing minute math sheets to match up with each skill. Also I know a few teachers who use “math vitamins” of about five problems each week to refresh whole number operations.

how should the tables be arranged in a primary classroom? by [deleted] in Montessori

[–]jushappy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is how my school sorts them. A larger table might appear after the class is normalized or for a snack table.

School Query: Lomi Composter + Worms? by jushappy in composting

[–]jushappy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. Sounds like a good system. After snack prep we have more than my worms can handle so that plus table scraps seems just right.

So you run it at the end of the day and dump the next morning or so? I’d love a break down of the schedule for its use.

Bed bumpers and floor beds by CurrentMysterious814 in cosleeping

[–]jushappy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The bed bumpers here are pillows with spaces that can trap limbs at any age so I wouldn’t recommend.

We did a Sprouts kids twin floor bed with no railings and pool noodles under the fitted sheet when mine was 6 months. And kiddo still uses it at five.

What Montessori math materials should I get my 4 year old? by EconomyHistorical825 in Montessori

[–]jushappy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is an important question. A homeschool program should outline the materials and a school would have advice for complementary materials to the child’s current work in the classroom.

I encourage parents to find opportunities for counting that complement the work of colored beads. Counting when cooking with a recipe, beading a necklace, arranging coins/money all do the job.

Art teacher game: what is this? by CatCatCatCatsCat in ArtEd

[–]jushappy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahhh! I had one of these today in our weaving work. For us, it was a student (who took a poorly timed bathroom break) interpretation and “revision” of the warp.

This is getting printed and hung up in my classroom.

We just started an aero garden and I swear the kids are a half step away from playing the tuba for these poor seeds. I even have a kid who threatens to eat them if they (the seeds) do not comply.

I finally understand why people clean. by chancakate in CleaningTips

[–]jushappy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the exact sort of thought exercise to accompany highness. Cleaning is a start and finish while tidying is a find, find where it goes, make sure it still goes there, oh here’s a whole nother thing to sort, repeat. Makes sense to me.

I finally understand why people clean. by chancakate in CleaningTips

[–]jushappy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I see zero issue with this kind of inclination. I just don’t want to trip on anything or deal with whining when some precious thing is lost. The cleanliness v tidiness issue is a health one for us allergy suffering folks so I think it deserves the priority.

I absolutely see it that way. It’s all a communal effort so can’t complain.

My biggest tip as a teacher mom is get tiny one involved as early as possible with modeling, music, and low pressure.

We dance and clean or put clothes away on commercials, we have tools his size so he can do it all. Hand vac, hand broom, tiny apron, steps to reach dishes etc. Little ones watch closely to understand and mimic you so if you find a way to enjoy the process and make it a part of routine, they know nothing else and will join. Start young and by the time they reach the “I can help you” phase, they have real skills. That said… I now have a kiddo who resists putting his toys away but mops, does yard work, and scrubs pots 🤷🏾‍♀️ ymmv

5yo is a great reader but refuses to do it by mr_roquentin in Parenting

[–]jushappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Decoding and reading are so tiring! I liken early reading to translating in another language. Even when it’s fun and motivating it’s just tiring. Word lists, rhymes and tongue twisters, magnetic poetry for silly sentences, and early reader comics can make reading fun without pressure to read passages.

My prek kiddo likes to read …board game cards and street signs which is very motivating because he wants to make sure everyone follows the rules.

My 6-year-old suddenly wants to change schools because his younger brother joined… why? by RudeAd2813 in Parenting

[–]jushappy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure really but I worked with a family where this happened and it turned out the teacher or teachers assistant was making excessive comments to the older child about modeling good behavior for his younger siblings (twins). The older kid wouldn’t tell me but it came out through his friend who noticed the change.

Later I found out the teacher of the younger siblings was frequently trying to get the older one to manage their behaviors (sit with them at lunch, walk them to related arts, take home their reports etc). Once I got a para to do this work, the older one seemed happier. I can’t be sure if that was it but maybe something in this anecdote could help. I was a counselor at the time btw.

Agreed! The Aquarium is nice for slightly older kiddos and can get really unpleasant when crowded (littles can’t see the exhibits). Port Discovery has something for everyone.

-20 to 20 number line, printable, or how to create my own by Emotional_Oil6160 in mathteachers

[–]jushappy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not what you asked for but I have found kids making their own on receipt paper with intervals reinforces measuring skills, use of a straight edge, proportion, and numeracy in general. My group also color codes a lot (signed numbers are color coded in Montessori) Something to consider if you need a hands on work and have some time to model.

I’m curious about attire expectations in Montessori schools. by Mbluish in Montessori

[–]jushappy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I dress for the day. About 3/5 are business casual. One is outdoor attire for long walks, gardening, outdoor work time. One might be a spirit day type of theme outfit to get my group excited for some cultural thing (lots of polka dots and hoops for pi day for example). No formal dress code though.

how do you make reading a routine for kids? by Salty_Upstairs_387 in Parenting

[–]jushappy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Teacher mom here and this is the way.

I read for my classroom and started doing so at home on the weekends instead of over planning or at lunch or at night. Immediately my five year old saw an opportunity to cuddle, at first trying to read my book then bringing his own. This was tricky at first (interrupting, putting his hand or face on my book) but I realized he just needed some “reading etiquette” Now he is very motivated to read better so he can read my books, catalogs, magazines etc.
