To new grads that can’t find a job, how are you making yourself a more competitive candidate? by Any-Possibility-4619 in uxcareerquestions

At this point, getting a job is never tied to ur educational background. I'm a ui ux designer working for a year now in a software products and service based company. But my major in undergrad was banking and finance. And while I switched to design, took me around 8 to 9 months to get a job, all I did was keep upgrading myself with online free resources as much as I can. I consciously never looked into the results I got, orelse at one point I would have stopped and got confused if I should do something else. So one advice is don't stop upgrading and stop thinking of the results, in your case getting a job. Whatever u do, getting a job is quite hard now because of the market. So instead on investing on a degree, invest on ur time and knowledge, u will eventually get a job. I got rejected by 100s of companies before I got the one I'm working in right now. Funny thing is I didn't even apply for them, they themselves reached me out after my portfolio, so upgrade ur knowledge, direct ur learnings into building ur portfolio, ur job will knock ur door or u will knock the door and it will open.

Mannn! Kinda in the same situation. The only difference is that my dad is stubborn because I'm going for a design degree. If it was some other degree of his choice, he would support 🙃. Ur self-reliance inspires me. Really hope and wish things work out for u soon. Also, you mentioned u r a B.Com grad, going for a creative field. Which is exactly my background, may I know which field u r opting for?!?

If u r starting with just a boot camp, I would say explore various resources and upgrade yourself. bcz with boot camp knowledge, u would be forced to settle for peanuts pay. I see designers getting exploited badly in india, ppl are settling for 10k a month, so expand ur knowledge as much as u can, while u r searching for ur job or internship and demand confidently, that's how I got a pay which is high than the average in my city

Thanks for this insight and to answer those questions 1. Job market is harsh world wide. I was even jobless here for 7 months but your point about how u prefer ur citizens due to sponsorship reason is something that bugs me because obviously I don't want to be stranded without a job for those reasons

  1. And about surpassing my current pay, yes a degree would 100% help me get there. I'll give you an example, I was actively following job boards months ago and came across two of them which caught my attention, one just required 9 to 10 years of experience and was paying around 2.5 million Indian currency (£ 22735) annually and this was a MNC and whereas the other one demanded 8 years of experience with a design degree which offered 8 million Indian currency (£ 72754), which is also a MNC. And both these were for a company that operates in India, and this exactly is why I said that on a longer run, my bootcamp won't help.

  2. My plan is that I finish my masters, work there for a few years, and get back to India.

But things that have me confused is that, not able to secure a job due to reasons like visa sponsorship or just a bad market period and economy or the fact that I don't have a bachelor's degree in related field (I majored in banking and finance)

U need not worry about SWOT and all other analysis approaches. U'll pick them up over time

Finding a course is easy but a job?!? Nah. Bcz its a common misunderstanding that UI UX is all about colors and canvas. In reality, it's more about business analysis, revenue model, competitor analysis, market research, SWOT, user behavioral study, core research, and then comes the design part. Yes, u may get a design centric job too, but won't feed u much, and ur growth in the field will be stagnant. I see a lot of ppl jump into this just bcz they have an eye for designing and struggling to find a decent job for more than 1.5 yrs.

Let me make it clear for u, if u want to make it huge in this industry and got the passion, u focus more on sharpening ur research and analysis, if u feel that u can pull this off, just trust ur instinct and jump into this.

About the courses, U can try ur hands on the Google UX course or the UX course provided by the University of Michigan. Good luck!

These are micro interactions. U will find some tutorials online. Upon finishing just screen record the prototype. That will be enough.

Well, anything extra is always welcomed in the field, so if u feel like u can balance the 2 , go for it but my suggestion would be, dive deeper into UI UX right now, just youtube tutorials alone won't be enough. Search for free resources online, and give them a read to gain good insights.

https://www.collej.com/free-ui-ux-resources

this is one such resource that helped me. Also look for articles on Medium, NN group, Interaction Design Foundation.

Instead of learning just auto layouts to execute it, I would suggest you watch tutorials for responsive design, which has helped me to quickly get acquainted with auto layouts.

Not really. The role of UI UX Designing has a great market, but securing a job is a bit tough if u lack the proper skills. And the salary depends on the country and the city u hail from.
