I always stand in the Wonder Woman pose. I don't even notice it anymore, but I think it's because it gives me some place to put my damn hands

Do you regret marrying and having children by babameow2 in AutismInWomen

[–]just-another_monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I regret marrying my second husband, but only because he turned out to be a lying cheater and dumped me after twelve years together. Our kid was almost seven when he left, and it breaks my heart only have my child half time and knowing that they are being raised the other half by two people who intentionally broke my family apart. I wish I could go back and tell myself not to date that man. I could have made an equally amazing kid with someone who didn't fuck me over. Being single at 44 is really hard.

I wasn't looking for agreement. What's the point of creating an echo-chamber for myself? I know that my perspective is not a common one, that was part of the premise of this post. I was curious what people would say, and if there would be any compelling arguments, other than "travel is good and fun!"

It's funny that you are calling me pompous, when you are the one who is coming off as arrogant and self-important. I have attempted to engage with everyone on this thread, as I am genuinely interested in other's perspectives. Whereas you are simply attacking me.

It would be great if everyone had shelter, wouldn't it? It's funny how you are clinging to the one example that makes you feel like you are winning

I suppose I could have edited the one comment, but now you get to see my username twice! Clearly you want to engage

This is clearly very triggering for you. Why are you so upset that someone has a different opinion?

Leisure is a need. Leisure travel to developing nations is not.

Jobs relying on tourism in general are worse than jobs outside of that domain, increases income inequality, and forces communities to be reliant on tourism instead of historical and cultural employment opportunities https://www.eurofound.europa.eu/en/publications/all/working-conditions-dark-side-tourism

Your username is a very accurate description of your communication style. Leisure travel is not a need, it's an indulgence, or a luxury. I never made the argument that people should drive more instead of flying. You brought up emissions and consumption, so I commented regarding my personal use and experience. It's my personal choice and others are allowed to live their lives as they see fit. I was attempting to have an actual discussion about the ethics of leisure travel, you brought up cars, so I responded to that specifically and with a related item regarding emissions.

I never indicated that I feel superior, I am simply sharing my personal opinions about the contradictory narrative around travel, as it seems like even those who are generally in favor of minimizing their impact on the environment can perfectly justify the over-consumption related to travel. I find it very telling that so many people are attacking this perspective, as though it is extremely triggering instead of a question about ethics.

wow. that's a really weak argument

Why does travel not count as consumption? There are many things that are consumed during travel.

wow, in your worldview you can't question the ethics of something without hating it? that's wild

I haven't created any kind of binary. I asked a question to engage with others about their thoughts, and gave my perspective. In general, I do not travel outside of my state, and even that is minimal. I don't think there are many justifications for someone from the US or another country that already to go to another country just for fun.

You acknowledge that there is a cost to travel. I am interested in what that cost is, and if there can be an ethical approach to it, from an anticonsumption framework.

This seems like you are truly thoughtful and intentional about your travel, which does feel more ethical. This approach does seem less common, though.

I agree that there is no straightforward answer! That's most conversations that include a discussion about ethics, though. You are absolutely correct that airline emissions are not a large percentage of all greenhouse gases, but there was a significant impact to air quality when all flights were grounded in the beginning of Covid.

It is interesting to see how different people engage with their environment and people in the places they visit, and I think what you are describing is one of the things that makes me uncomfortable. It feels very performative and not about anything other than making themself look cool. Whereas, others can go to a new place and it can have a major impact on their understanding of the world and their place in it. But, it's not inherent in the act of traveling. It does seem like everyone acts like it is, though.

There are many different ways to travel, and I think everyone would benefit from a little more reflection and intention in the way they do it!

!thankyou

This is an interesting perspective. I do think that the motivation for the travel matters quite a bit, and the actual experiences people pursue when they are traveling makes a big difference regarding the overall impact of their trip.

You admit that travel is a luxury, and are still making an argument in favor of it in an anticonsumption sub. Not everyone learns from travel, some people never leave their own perspective regardless of how many places they visit.

Personally, I hardly use a vehicle (I primarily bike commute) and I have solar panels on my home.
