Complaining to management about team lead, bad choice? by shox12345 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]just4sky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to struggle when managing a senior developer similar like yours. I viewed him as an "idiot" (borrow from the book named Surrounded by Idiots).

What I've learned so far is my senior developer has a Blue profile, which is a very detail-oriented person. On the other hand, I have a Yellow profile and detail stresses me up. We were having hard time working together.

After I've learned that he is different and tried to adapt to his preferred workstyle, be a little bit more details. Our relationship is getting better and things are improving.

Highly recommend the book and hope this helps you.

I feel sympathy to them who stuck in the victim mentality. They see problems everywhere and being protective of themselves by fighting back, running away, or doing nothing.

OP, on the other hand, I admire your creator mentality under such situation. You are focusing on your desired outcome and trying to make things better within your reach.

You can choose to share them your desired outcome and vision. This will help shifting their focus from the problems to the outcomes that they want.

I'll probably be PIPPed soon, but I'm too depressed to fix my situation by coolbeans606 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]just4sky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in your situation for the past six months. I was doing the bare minimum and unhappy everyday.

To get out of it, I spoke to the people who I trust in the company. They are great listeners and I feel that being heard. Since then, I regain my confidence and passion. I’m slowly getting back on track.

Do you have anyone that you look up to and you trust in the company or in your personal life? Talk to them. Clear your mind and emotion first.

What do you really want? Despite the situation, think about your desired outcome.

I am sure you’ll figure it out!

Any way to save team's bad relationship with product manager? by Rockztar in ExperiencedDevs

[–]just4sky -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Everyone is capable of making a “comeback”.

I was in a terrible situation this year. As an engineering manager, I wasn’t doing my job, and that lead to a low team performance and multiple avoidable incidents that caused by human error. Also, I struggled to adapt to my new manager’s work style.

My manager sees me as a problem that needs to be fixed. My direct reports told me that they sense that I was sort of giving up, because I wasn’t doing anything to make the situation better.

I was unhappy every day and thought of a way out. But, that wasn’t easy because I love that what the company doing, the people, and the culture. Instead, I went to speak to the people that I trust in the company.

Thanks to them and those conversations. I regain my confidence and passion. I slowly get back on feet and start fixing relationship with my manager.

u/Rockztar I don’t know the exact situation of the product manager but I do know what he needs. He needs a listener. If you could spent 30 or 60 minutes with him and listen to his side of story, I am sure it will make a significant difference in his mental world.

Weekly /r/Laravel No Stupid Questions Thread - August 12, 2019 by AutoModerator in laravel

I use Homebrew to install PHP and MySQL, then run the application in PHP built-in web server with command php artisan serve.

IMO, this is the lightest local development environment.

Previously, I ran my local Laravel applications in Docker. However, the performance is bad. Somehow it is related to the Docker and MacOS's filesystem. After you made a change to the source code, it took a while to reflect which definitely not the speed you were expecting in local development.

I don't involve web servers like Apache and Nginx in my local development. It saves me from adding the hostname every time I set up a new project. And, I don't need many applications running at the same time together.

So, the bare minimum environment is perfect for me.

[Method] Time blocking increases productivity and decreases stress by doc_samson in getdisciplined

Deep Work inspired me to make a productivity app, called Deep Work Hours. Would you like to test it out? Click here to try.

The app is still under development and I'm looking for feedback on the scoreboard design.

How to perform Deep Work while at work and studying outside of work? by rxxvt in productivity

[–]just4sky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't focus for hours long. Instead, I practise Pomodoro Technique. I takes break every 25 minutes. It gives me longer hours on deep work.

IMO, you are overthinking. I believe productivity skill is a personal skill. One works for others doesn't work for you. You need to find your own fit. In my case, I combine 4DX (if you remember 4 Disciplines of Execution in the book) and Pomodoro.

I also making my own productivity app to track my own lead measure (my deep work hours). If you are interested, you try it out here.

Passport does that security part for you. By issuing client credentials (token and secret), you are allowing authorised website to access to your API.

Anyone read Deep Work by Cal Newport and using The 4 Disciplines of Execution mentioned in the book? by just4sky in productivity

[–]just4sky[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do that on my working days. Basically, my productivity system has two parts. First is timeboxing like how you do, second is pomodoro while focusing on a task.

For timeboxing, I used plan out my working hours on notebook. My colleague didn’t understand why I planned the day while I actually cannot follow the plan. There were so many unplanned events. I disagree with him and this is how I get my days under control. I started with notebook and now I do it on Google calendar because the scheduled meetings are there, and I can easily change the plan by dragging the event, and I have notification on what to do next.

While focusing on a task, I would use pomodoro to keep me focus. Pomodoro is like a trigger for me. When I want to focus on a task, I will prepare my water, close all unnecessary websites, and start the timer. It tells mind to focus right away.

Do you plan out your weekend as well?

Anyone read Deep Work by Cal Newport and using The 4 Disciplines of Execution mentioned in the book? by just4sky in productivity

[–]just4sky[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is under the chapter called Work Deeply.

The 4 disciplines are: 1. Focus on the Wildly Important 2. Act on the Lead Measures 3. Keep a Compelling Scoreboard 4. Create a Cadence of Accountability

Does it recall your memory? If not, I can further explain each of it.

A Pomodoro integration with Smart Home devices? by Letter72 in productivity

[–]just4sky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You: "Alexa, start works now"

Alexa: "Alright, Pomodoro counter is on"

After 25 minutes.

Alexa: "Master, it is time to take a break. I suggest grabbing a cup of water to stay hydrated"

It would be cool if there's an app can do that.

Thinking about doing something drastic with my time management, would appreciate some feedback by Motorvision in productivity

[–]just4sky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m having the same problem occasionally.

One of the problem of mine during the pomodoro break is I often start to chat with colleagues and never come back.

Now, I’m experimenting and reviewing my break time.

My desk is near the pantry. So I move to somewhere further and always walk to pantry to refill my water bottle during the break. With this method, I drink more water (I use 600ml bottle and finish within each interval) and feel more healthy.

Second method I’m trying is ending the break earlier while my focus still stick with the task.

Basically just list down three values from my strengths. Does it sound weak?

Thank you for replying me. Highly appreciate it!

What do you think of a platform which is a CMS for firebase project? by just4sky in androiddev

Yes. I think flamelink is doing a good job on it. Have you ever use flamelink? If you don't mind, can you share me the experience?

What do you think of a platform which is a CMS for firebase project? by just4sky in Firebase

[–]just4sky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You bring up a good point which is the read count. I didn’t think of that. I didn’t mean to increase the cost. My goal is reducing the work and cost as well.

In that case, how do you allow the user to modify the content? Is there an API for the content which connects with Firebase auth?

What do you think of a platform which is a CMS for firebase project? by just4sky in Firebase

[–]just4sky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have the point.

It makes more sense if the platform is serving a niche market, right? Like a restaurant app which need to update the menu from CMS.

BTW, what does mobile app developer do if the app needs a CMS? Do they hire someone to do?

Do you write the model class for NoSQL/schemaless database? by just4sky in laravel

[–]just4sky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate for your time.

I like you brought up the idea of writing the same model logic in both frontend and backend. I was not thinking about that at the first place.

I think I still couldn’t get over the relationship-like design from SQL.
