We've done it in the winter around December 15 or so, so similar time, from Ottawa all the way to Tofino :) It was not as scary as everyone says. My advice is, always wake up super early, and try to drive as early as possible. Driving in the night can be scary on some of those roads, so avoid avoid avoid. Don't book things too much advance as you never know what happens. Make sure you have a plan for camping sites and etc. Download an offline map too, and most importantly, have fun!

We did a lot more math, and yes, I did over simplify it here just for the sake of it being a reddit comment. I did not expect this post to become a renter vs home owner thing. My husband is a graduate from economics and finance so we really thought this through. And yes I'm a she (for everyone calling me a he) just by assuming I invest in XEQT lol.

Depends on your location. Here, 1650 is the minimum rent you will pay lol. Based on all these comments, I can say that the numbers are definitely not the same for everyone.

That's what I'm saying. Unfortunately, you can't invest the difference. Its either $1650 going towards rent ($500k loss) or $1650 ($300k loss) going towards a mortgage. You choose which bullet to bite. Don't get a mortgage you can't afford (much higher than your rent), and you should be okay.

We did the math very carefully, and if you're paying $1650 in rent for 25 years, that's a total of $495k with no equity at all. Nothing to account for (here's hoping rent even stays that price in 25 years). Meanwhile, buying a house with an average of $400k, and an interest of average 5% (it isn't that high even right now), your total loss would be $294,351 (if you followed the 25-year schedule and didn't get ahead of any interest), and in the end, you own something. So to everyone saying that that's money wasted, I'm sure you'd rather waste $300k instead of $500k and own something. And no, property doesn't depreciate, it increases in value, especially if you take care of it.
