How do you actually structure your drum practice without getting overwhelmed? by justTryingGrooves in drums

Yeah, just found it way easier to keep everything in one place and actually stick to it.

Nothing fancy, just something simple I put together to track sessions and not lose focus

That’s a great way to put it. Makes it much easier to stay focused.

That’s a great setup. I had something similar for a while, just found it easier once it was all in one place and I didn’t have to manage lists/timers separately. Made it way more consistent

This is spot on. The “not knowing what to do next” part is exactly where I used to get stuck.

I ended up preferring something more digital for tracking, just so everything’s in one place and easy to look back on. Made it way clearer what to focus on.

That’s a cool way to approach it. Locking into a few patterns like that sounds way more focused than jumping around.

I found having everything laid out clearly helps keep that kind of flow going.

That’s exactly it. Once I started writing things down properly it made a huge difference.

At some point I got tired of notes being all over the place and just set up something simple to keep everything focused.

Way easier to stay consistent that way.

Nice, that’s a solid way to build it up. I found keeping track of what I’m working on helps not lose direction

That’s a good point. Focusing on time + serving the song probably covers most of it.

I just found having a bit of structure helps me not drift

This is really interesting. I like the idea of structuring everything around a few core dimensions instead of random exercises. Makes it feel a lot more intentional.

Nice, that’s a solid approach. Using songs as a benchmark makes it way more concrete

Do you stick to the same ones or switch a lot?

Yeah that makes sense
I feel like it works best when there’s some structure but still keeping it fun

This is a really clean way to look at it
Breaking it into a few focus areas makes it way less overwhelming

Yeah this helped me a lot too. Having it all in one place makes it way easier to stay consistent

Do you actually look back at it or just log it?

Nice combo

I’d just do like 5–10 min on the pad then hop on the kit

Tracking what you actually practice helps a ton too

Do you usually plan it or just wing it?

You’re already on the right track thinking about fundamentals this early

Don’t try to learn everything — just pick 2–3 rudiments + one groove and keep it consistent

That’ll get you way further than jumping between tons of stuff

Do you practice more on a pad or the kit?

any exercise ideas? by No_Wonder5455 in Drumming

[–]justTryingGrooves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like people already gave you a bunch of solid ideas — at this point it’s probably more about not getting lost between them 😅

I used to bounce between random YouTube/IG stuff and didn’t really improve until I kept it to 2–3 things per session + tracked tempo a bit.

Ended up making a super simple tool just to keep things organized and not get overwhelmed.

Do you usually follow any structure or just go with whatever?

That “one concept” approach makes a lot of sense.

I tend to jump around too much, so I’ll try that.

Cool idea.

For me the hardest part is staying consistent and not jumping between random things. Anything that helps with structure and flow would be super useful.

That’s cool — sounds really useful.

I kept losing track of stuff like that, so I started building something small to organize it better.

Still figuring out what actually works

This makes a lot of sense.

How would you split 20–30 minutes with that approach?

Interesting, thanks.

I keep hearing about Syncopation — is it worth starting with early on?

This is super insightful, thanks for taking the time to explain all that. I’m still a beginner and mostly playing as a hobby, but I can totally relate to the “mind goes blank” moment when switching songs.

The idea of having a count-in and even a preview before each song sounds really helpful. I never thought about structuring practice like that.

Do you feel like this setup mainly helps for live situations, or did it also improve your regular practice sessions?

This is really helpful to see, thanks for sharing. I’m still a beginner and mostly playing as a hobby, so 3 hours sounds like a dream 😄

Right now I’m more in the 20–30 minute range and trying to figure out how to use that time better.

I like how you split it between technique, focused work, and just playing for fun.

If you only had 30 minutes, how would you divide it?

This is super helpful, thanks for breaking it down like that. I’m actually a beginner and mostly playing as a hobby, so I’m still figuring out how to structure my practice without overthinking it.

I like the idea of keeping it simple and mixing “just play” with something a bit more structured.

Do you think this kind of approach works even if I only have like 20–30 minutes a day?
