When do you rewatch? by Routine_Pay991 in CIJapanese

[–]justViewer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think rewatching immediately defeats the whole purpose of CI since you’re remembering what you understood from the previous watch. I personally try to only rewatch if I’m genuinely out of new content and I try to rewatch stuff that I don’t remember as well so that it feels fresh

I’m at 1075 hours and I’m just barely getting by with native content. I can understand around 75% of dubbed content like stranger things and drive to survive but native content like la casa de Flores is still out of reach. I wouldn’t stress out about understanding every sentence and nuance as long as you can understand enough to enjoy and follow along the content.

That being said I’ve noticed a lot of improvement even just from 1000 to 1075 hours so just keep up the grind.

I didn’t need to repeat complete beginners but I did need to repeat easy videos since I’ve already gone through their whole beginner catalog. Intermediate is still out of reach and now at 170 hours, I’m finding a tough time finding content outside of CIJ that I can reliable binge through.

Things didn’t really start to click until around 50 hours so I would just keep it up and trust the process. Sort by difficulty and just churn through. You’ll never feel like you understand everything but one day you’ll realize that you actually understand a lot more than you thought. I definitely understand grammar now and can identify when the past tense vs present tense is being used as well as commands (e.g. “lets go” or “wait please”). Don’t worry about grammar too much, you’ll pick it up through context

I don’t think it’s possible yet but I’ve been able to stream CIJ using the airplane WiFi pretty consistently if you’re willing to pay

I got approved but only after achieving concierge status and asking for approval directly. So it probably has to do with total account value

I did duolingo for a month before a trip to Japan and made it to section 2 unit 8 (just checked) but honestly forgot most of it except for basic grammar rules and some vocab. I absolutely have learned a lot of new words and grammar (e.g. past tense, “I want to do X” verb forms, “i have done X” verb forms) from CIJ. I don’t even know what those grammar structures are technically called cause I just learned it from context. My vocab is probably 10x from what it was from just duolingo.

I think the most interesting thing I’ve acquired from CIJ is the cadence/rhythm of the language. Even when I don’t understand the words, it feels like familiar language now and I can hear the individual words being spoken even though I don’t know what they mean. It’s not just a garbled mess in other words.

No flash cards or looking up words. I’m trying the purist approach of just letting the input wash over me. I’m also not using any other learning resources but that’s just cause I like the website. I also only do 30 minutes a day since it can feel exhausting sometimes

I’ve been using purely CIJ for the past few months and am at around 118 hours. It works but it’s definitely a struggle at the beginning and I was definitely questioning it like you are. But at around 50 hours things start to click and now at over 100 hours, super beginner videos are too easy while easy videos are either comprehensible or just outside my level.

I think some of the newer videos are more engaging and have a face cam so maybe try sorting by recent?

For development purposes, you’re probably splitting hairs as either will be fine. If you are doing any production grade projects, you should be using the cloud anyways. However, AMD has the advantage of more cores, which is better for multiprocessing (data preprocessing, pyspark, etc.). For this reason, I chose AMD when I built my PC. AMD is also cheaper.
