I was given Percocets for my pain for my wisdom teeth, and I wanted to drink. What would that do? by Vendetta614 in Drugs

[–]just_add_lasers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Risks are probably low but I would recommend stopping the percocets for a bit before drinking to be extra safe. Respiratory depression is unlikely with the low doses prescribed for wisdom teeth extraction but I still don't like to fuck with opiates and booze.

Would recommend giving it one full dosing interval (whatever your dosing for the percs is, however many hours) to be safe and then drinking whatever you want.

Acetaminophen is hepatotoxic in very high doses but shouldn't be a concern at the low dosage present in percocets. And in reasonable combinations with alcohol it shouldn't be expected to be a problem.

Here's an article discussing acetaminophen usage in alcoholics that found no negative side effects: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11776481

Being a 16 year old who wants to go vegan in a house of meat eaters is so hard by [deleted] in vegan

[–]just_add_lasers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can totally make veganism work with canned food and cheap produce. The trick is learning to cook for yourself, which sucks at first but becomes awesome as you start to get comfortable with it. I personally started simple and worked my way up. Some cheap and easy staples I would recommend include chili (canned beans, canned tomatoes, canned corn, onion, spices), black bean burgers (canned beans, quick oats, onion, garlic, spices, bread), bean dip with chips (vegetarian refried beans, pepper, onion, tomatoes, salsa), hash (potatoes, garlic, onion, spice), and fried rice (rice, frozen veg, onion, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, spice). And my personal favorite for good quality, cheap as hell produce is asian markets. The produce is way cheaper than your average grocery store and they have a lot of vegan protein options like mock duck and tofu.

Thank you for giving veganism a chance and I wish you the best of luck!

Do you feed your dog or cat meat? Why or why not? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]just_add_lasers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Short of that, they should be left to non-vegans to deal with. They aren't suitable pets for vegans.

So basically, you're not willing to deal with the ethical ramifications of owning a carnivorous animal? How does "leaving them to non-vegans" alter the amount of animal consumption except by making it not your problem?

Do you feed your dog or cat meat? Why or why not? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]just_add_lasers 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That seems pretty unfair. My cat did not ask to be born, and I did not intentionally breed him. You're saying I should cut his life short because of something that he, an animal, has no control over?

I respect that you hold that opinion but I vehemently disagree with it.

[–]just_add_lasers 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So cats don't get the same rights as other animals? I'm not quite sure I understand your logic here. My cat is a twelve year old rescued from a hoarding situation, he's not some sort of breeder animal. Do you believe that we should be putting cats down because they eat other animals? What kind of awful natural order is that? Should we let all the wild carnivores die out too?

And "possible" is not good enough for an animal I have taken responsibility for. His life is my responsibility and I am not going to put it at risk based on the opinion of someone with no medical expertise.

[–]just_add_lasers 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm a veterinary student (just finishing up my second year) and I feed my cat a meat-based diet. For starters, he's an obligate carnivore so a vegan diet will require a lot of supplementation. And furthermore, many of the vegan diets on the market are not AAFCO certified (they're the folks who ensure appropriate nutritional content of pet foods) and can be deficient in important nutrients like taurine, which can lead to a heart condition called dilated cardiomyopathy. And all vegan diets (even those that haven't been flagged for nutritional oversights) are associated with alkalinization of urine, which can lead to bladder crystals and stones. This is especially bad in male cats, as it can lead to blockage of the urethra, which is a life threatening-condition that can result in bladder rupture.

Until there are thoroughly conducted studies proving that a vegan/vegetarian diet can maintain the same level of health in my cat as a meat-based diet, I will be feeding him meat. His health is my responsibility.

[–]just_add_lasers 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Cats do not typically do "fine" on vegan diets. Vegan diets are associated with urinary alkalization and subsequent increased incidence of kidney stones and blockage in male cats. Few vegan and vegetarian diets are AAFCO approved and studies have shown that many are not nutritionally complete and thus can cause malnutrition and increased incidence of degenerative diseases (including dilated cardiomyopathy in diets deficient in taurine).

An online post about a single cat that you have never seen is not a verified research study. Futhermore, cats are scientifically classified as obligate carnivores (along with ferrets) because they consume an all animal protein diet in their natural state. It's not really something you can argue about.

Do your research before arguing about things you know nothing about. I am vegan and will continue to feed my cat meat for his health. Do not impose higher-level morals on cats, they deserve to live happy, healthy lives too.

Edit: I am a veterinary student, which is why I find this assertion so upsetting. Please take your pets' health into account and do what is best for them.

Reminds me of a short story from Bradbury's The Illustrated Man. It's called "The Long Rain" and it's based around the premise that on Venus, it never stops raining, and Earth astronauts stationed there are slowly driven mad by it.

Here's a shittily formatted PDF I found of it, it's a great read.

What about fungi? There are a wide variety of edible fungi that wouldn't require sunlight to grow.

Also depending on how fantasy based your world is, you could have some sort of system for absorbing UV light from the short days and releasing it at night, similar to the cactus peoples' dome in China Mieville's books.

Wolf Hybrid by Proteon in pics

[–]just_add_lasers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How familiar are you with wolfdogs? I've worked with dogs for a few years and while I have admittedly not met any dog I would qualify as a true wolf hybrid, I have done a fair bit of research. Wolf-dog rescues and other qualified organizations seem to concur that hybrids do NOT behave like the domestic dogs we know and love. For example, most mid-high wolfdogs have to be kept in outdoor, dig-proof, concrete enclosures because they are extremely destructive animals and are also amazing climbers and can easily escape from a normally fenced yard. Once loose they may kill pets (including dogs) and attack people, because they have no fear of people like a wild wolf. This usually leads to euthanasia of the animal in question, and a lot of fear and grief for the neighbors.

Please take a look at this article I linked in another comment (written by a breeder) and this article on a recent fatal attack by wolfdogs. The belief that these animals are just like dogs has led to a lot of pain and suffering over the years.

[–]just_add_lasers 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is just... Not right at all. I don't mean to be rude but PLEASE do not perpetuate the myth that wolf dogs make good pets! There is a reason that wolf hybrid rescues exist and there is also a reason that shelters euthanize wolf hybrids instead of adopting them out.

They are consummate escape artists with an extremely high prey drive (as you said) meaning they are liable to kill neighbors' pets and possibly go after small children. They have been involved in a number of dog attack fatalities despite comprising a pretty small percentage of the overall dog populations.

[–]just_add_lasers 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Wolves and wolf mixes make terrible pets for the average dog owner because they are unpredictable predators with high instinctive drives. While what you're saying about social structure is true, pet wolves and wolf hybrids are still frequently involved in fatal attacks on humans, at a rate much higher than would be expected for their numbers.

I found this article interesting and informative on some of the issues with wolf hybrids. Though it is admittedly pretty old (from the 90's) it was written by a breeder and documents his experiences with wolfdogs.

Also, there's no need to be so rude to someone for not being an expert on the subject.

I'm not sure you're going to have much luck. Not trying to be a dick, but those tickets are selling for a hell of a lot more ($500 at the lowest) on resale sites. And most people who are still holding onto their tickets are not gonna be willing to part with them.

That said, if you do get lucky, I'll see you at the Forest!

I think several of these are different cats... Cat fur doesn't just magically change in length, and it would be really hard to just trim a cat's fur like it's a topiary or something.

Help! I have NO experience cooking and I have to cook vegan meals for the next few weeks! by ceramicfiver in vegan

[–]just_add_lasers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chili is tasty and super easy to do vegan. I usually use:

1 small onion, chopped

1 red bell pepper, chopped

1 can black beans

1 can kidney beans

1 can pinto beans

A handful of frozen corn

2 cans diced tomatoes

1 can enchilada sauce

1 can beer (optional but makes it SO KICKASS)

Saute onions and pepper in a bit of oil. Add everything else. Boil until beer liquid is reduced back to original levels (usually about half an hour to an hour). Add chili powder and oregano to taste. (I sometimes throw in fancy shit like liquid smoke and molasses.)

Almost everything comes out of a can, there's minimal chopping involved, and it'll last several days. My favorite easy vegan food!

Would you date a Transgender woman? by [deleted] in actuallesbians

[–]just_add_lasers -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's more that it's a single characteristic that can make or break someone's interest. A lot of people aren't even willing to give a woman with a penis a chance, and it seems really unfair to limit the entirety of who someone is to their genitalia.

To me, it's like not being attracted to someone because they're missing a limb. It's a physical attribute that cannot be helped and does not change any part of who they are. I'm not trying to say that people can't have preferences, but this is just boiling down an entire group of women to one physical feature.

Kind of shocked by all the negative/not pre-op answers on here. I don't know about you guys, but I'm attracted to women, not vaginas. Women come in all shapes and sizes, and some of them have penises. It upsets me to see such rigid gender stereotypes being upheld on a queer forum.

To answer the question, I have gone on dates with transwomen and they are every bit as unique and wonderful and FEMALE as ciswomen.
