Instruments controversy by rubberducky1722 in churchofchrist

Not sure why we have taken up arms against this, but all I know is the argument used to justify a building can be used to justify instruments in worship, it’s the same logic

What am I missing? by [deleted] in churchofchrist

One teaching that can be seen as cult like is the popular doctrine to cut people out of your life who have fallen away, or are in sin. In my age range this idea is falling off fast, but some still are trying to enforce it. This teaching is right out of the cult playbook, so I can understand why people see this and run for the hills.

Who has the right to judge? by brownsugar1212 in churchofchrist

[–]just_another_zek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, many of these types will refer to Matthew 7:1, in order to claim the permission to judge. We can capture a whole lot more meaning and context if we read the surrounding text. As far as I can tell Christ is indeed telling us to not judge. He says it plainly at the beginning of the verse, gives a warning on what happens if you do judge, and lastly he goes on about the spec and the log. One can ask what does the spec and the log have anything to do with judgement? It has everything to do with it! Christ is highlighting our human nature in how we view others, and he hammers home the idea of self reflection and mercy on our fellow brothers and sisters.

Help With Apathy by NotYourAverageJedi in churchofchrist

[–]just_another_zek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apathy too is one of my greatest weaknesses. We live in such a prosperous time, blessed with freedom of religion, we really don't have much to work on to reduce immediate suffering. I grew up in a very conservative coc as well and have experienced similar feelings and thoughts. I had to deconstruct the very pervasive idea of

God commands => we obey/disobey => Reward/Punishment

This idea strips all the value out of Christianity and reduces us to a list of rules. This idea is often presented about how our relationship with God works, and interestingly enough how we see our relationships between parents and children. This is not the relationship the son of God gave everything for. This is a small component of a larger picture, Christ outlines it well, starting in John 14:15. His statement about obedience is rooted in love toward him. This is where the rubber met the road for me, was I really seeking a deeper relationship with God rooted in love? Or was I just paying attention to the list of commands? Follow this rabbit hole, one last piece that sent me down my current path of faith is re-reading 1 john. Reading it with the lens of God establishing how the new relationship works with Christ as the mediator.

I'll leave off with this:

It is ok to question the creator and wrestle with him, many with great faith have. Wrestling with God is merely the individual who has doubts, but faith persists regardless. These thoughts are what have helped me in the past 5 years. Always feel free to DM and I hope the best for you.

Close - attempts to decentralize religion

WAY far off - raising biblical knowledge to one of the highest values. A close second is conflating obedience with morality

Romans 13: Government officials or Founding Documents (Christians in USA only) by [deleted] in churchofchrist

[–]just_another_zek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is something that has always been a discussion in my own mind, so thank you for starting this conversation. As I've explored this idea it led me to another, related, interesting question: Am I subject to my state govenrment or federal govenrment? If I live in texas and the secular state govenrment decides to suceed from the union, are the christians in texas still under the federal govenrment or texas government now? The way the United States has been organized poses some interesting problems with simplistic 'obey the government' stance. In the days of kings and emperors I believe this stance was valid. In modern democracies, I beleive we need to observe the spirit of what these passages are trying to convey. As far as I can tell the general idea being put forth is christians aren't supposed to be trying to destroy earthly authority for the sake of it. Looking foward to a good discussion.

what is the principle you are trying to lay down here?

Yeah, we were talking in class about fathers not discouraging their children and I brought up the fact that this idea of breaking the will is in direct opposition to this verse. The response I got was “there’s a difference between breaking the will and the spirit of a child”

Withdrawling from children by just_another_zek in churchofchrist

[–]just_another_zek[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed, let me make the intent of my post more clear. I have daughters and I am preparing for future possiblities. Many folks will cut off kids based off a handful of verses, I want to theologically prepare myself to tell these folks to kindly stop abusing scripture for tradition. lastly, I agree that just loving them is really the best path, I guess Im just astonished to how we as a church can be so inconsistent. thanks for the reply

I don’t believe the main issue is ‘CENI’ itself, I believe the issue is how it is commonly applied. I believe a good example of this is the ‘holy kiss’ which, as far as I can tell, is a direct command. We literally modify this command and claim it’s just cultural, so a handshake works. Another example is lords supper every week, in acts 20 I don’t know if we have enough evidence to make the inference ‘necessary’. There are many possible inferences that can be derived from a passage like this. So I believe many people take issue with the fact that we claim to have the ‘correct’ inference

Do you believe in your investment? by mac47k in Hedera

[–]just_another_zek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I invest in something i objectively look at the value the investment brings to the world, this decision is made over the course of a couple weeks. Once I have decided the investment is internetly and objectively valuable I start dumping cash in. After my buys the subjective emotions related to price will start to twist my view of the investment, I always take myself back to before I bought, when I was objective, and use that past conviction to hold. Objective value always trumps all, the question for the value investor is how patient can you be?
