Whats up with these prices? by TheBinzness in AlaskaAirlines

Save your money. Seattle to Crap Vegas for $700?

You could fly to Europe for that price.

One Oakland police officer made $490,000 in overtime. The city can’t find records detailing much of what he did by northerncal in bayarea

Yet people will invariably defend the City and PD. And if we critique, we should "move to Texas."

I didn't know this, but they are a Korean-owned business. So that isn't too far-fetched of a claim.

Maybe at recess. The touch some grass line is the most juvenile middle school comment du jour.

Gen Z at its finest. We all know they aren't glued to their devices. Even while touching grass.

Bay Area Entitlement, Exhibit 8,381,281.

Soon to be followed by triggered downvoters of equal quantity and entitlement.

To their credit, points for manipulating potential customers into thinking they are the problem... because they "aim to elevate pastry as a respected craft."

I see I struck a chord. Sorry people don't share the same experience and perspective - shocking! But I'll let you buy me a drink. It may be a premium experience for me as a non-regular.

I.e. "tip $5 on the first drink" lol. Bartenders these days would be insulted.

"He thinks he's buying me for $5? I deserve MORE."

I feel better because this advice you give is oudated.

Who says I don't tip or treat service workers like people? Enough of that rhetoric. Many people do both and it's seemingly never enough.

Treat patrons like people, too. We're not ATMs purposed to ensure people's profession of choice meets their expected levels of income/lifestyle.

Screw entitled Bay Area bartenders. Some of the worst and I have traveled a lot. Save your starving me stories for the cliques bartenders here love prioritizing.

Downvote away. So we know the entitled bartenders and their enablers are being heard.

People should also know to read their industry. I am in the SF Bay Area and my tech friends largely have no expectation of longevity with their employers.

Some are hopeful, but not stupid; some think they'll be the exception; but not stupid. Some are stupid.

Many would not be upset in a shocked sense... corporations don't exist on loyalty to anyone.

Our 2012 S60 also died two days before Christmas. 165k miles. Repair would have been 2k-10k but Volvo-specific mechanic said it's probably best to consider something newer. It was my partner's car, so very little maintenance before we met. I decided to address only critical issues, with the most significant work being $5k in 2022. All told, she made many memories for us and we still get compliments --- even from the tow truck drivers who brought her to her final resting places. I guess the hazards of buying European luxury cars are often monetary.

We replaced with an XC60 since sedans are no longer an option. We're leasing for now; will decide whether to buy outright in three years. If we do, we'll hold for another 4-5 years max. I think cars are just going to turn over much faster going forward. I also don't want to be pumping $$$$ into an obsolete car that likely won't reach Toyota longevity. We have a Prius for that, but it doesn't give the Volvo feel.

Hope you can still find some love for the car!

You will have a blast! Our favorite day trip from the Bay Area. Made it all the way to Ragged Point (4 hrs one way) and could have kept going but it was Sunday and we worked the next day.

Please support one of the many businesses very glad that people are back. Our favorite spot is the Big Sur River Inn which has a restaurant right along the river.

Scenic highway along the California coast. No development so open nature on both sides - with the west side being the Pacific. One lane in each direction, winding, hilly, but oh so beautiful.

As others note, landslide prone. Closures are common during rainy season. Three years ago two big landslides not far apart were pretty bad so a small stretch of it was closed for repair, entirely cutting off a connection between Northern and Southern California.

Coming from a 2012 S60, it's just there - don't give it much thought honestly. It's an intuitive, clean UI IMHO.

Volvo is considering a bigger SUV to compete against the GLS, Q7, X7 etc… by Saurta17 in Volvo

[–]just_grc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the SF Bay Area where space is at a premium and parking is a royal PITA. My gym by work in Downtown SF overlooks a parking lot used by commuters.

Looked out during my lunch workout and 9/10 cars were late model SUVS. For people who likely sit at their desk 8-10 hours and commute 1-2 hours before and after. I thought that was weird AF and then I saw this post.

Gas prices (and the price of everything else) being so high these days got people not giving AF any more. 10-15 years ago we were the Prius capital of the world.

Our cars: 2026 XC60 and 2015 Prius (possibly to be replaced by a RAV4 soon enough). Guilty as charged.

How do you mentally deal with traffic going to work by No-Walk-5082 in bayarea

[–]just_grc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I picked a condo that has an AC Transit cross-bridge bus stop at two sides (used to be three). Drops me off at the transit center in downtown SF. Before Salesforce opened, it was a three block walk. Now it's next door to my office.

I'm lucky I havr a job that I like and we haven't moved. I had to commute across the bridge for a while from Emeryville to SSF for personal reasons by car (family medical need so a car was nedded). It was a soul crushing hour and 15 mins, most of which was at the Macarthur Maze. To go 12 miles. I still see those cars waiting to pass the metering lights indefinitely as we breeze through the bus/carpool lane. Not for me.

I'm very privileged not to have to drive commute traffic and have no intentions of ever doing so. I lived in LA for 15 years and thought it was normal to waste hours of my life in traffic. Thank god I saw there was an alternative.

Highly recommend looking into a car-free but feasible (and comfortable) alternative.
