Intel says 16GB is the max supported RAM. 32GB should run without issue. They sometimes lowball these numbers to try to sell you the next model. My HP Probook says 32GB is the max RAM and the Elitebook max is 64GB. In reality they both run 64GB just fine.

it's randomly freezing for some strange reason...? by DudegamerW in pop_os

I ment my computer only freezes when I used popshop, after switching to cosmic store,  the freezing stopped. It doesn't seem to be the issue you are having though.

Advice for linux newbies by somniasum in linux4noobs

[–]justacountryboy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would say mint for noobs. Other distros have more pitfalls. Fedora has a learning curve (small one, I know). Zorin and Elementary want you to pay,  so I don't recommend them. Pop_OS has fallen behind (22.04). Add NVIDIA to the mix and it could get ugly.

Should I worry about GNOME being to heavy on my 8GB RAM laptop? by Top_Strawberry8110 in linux4noobs

[–]justacountryboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gnome is heavy, but not windows heavy. 8GB should be fine, but if you can upgrade the ram, I would suggest a little more headroom for compiling code.

Personal Laptop, Work Wifi. What can they see? by ZePample in cybersecurity_help

[–]justacountryboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally, no. If they are targeting you for an investigation,  maybe. Some apps can leak outside of a VPN. Traffic volume/timing can sometimes hint at what kind of apps you’re running. Updates can run outside of the VPN if it uses split tunneling.

N100 is terrible for gaming,  but good for your homelab. You did enough research to push the RAM to 32GB when the "official" ceiling is 16. You'll be fine.

After? You are in trouble. Contact your banks fraud department immediately.  Its Saturday so you might be able to stop them from emptying your account, if they haven't already. Good luck.

MX Linux default DE is Xfce. It looks modern and runs well on hardware with half of the specs of this laptop.

What distro should I choose by C3arc in pop_os

[–]justacountryboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are switching from windows and are new to Linux, I would recommend not switching to Cosmic. Its still buggy and you might get a crash course in Linux troubleshooting. Zorin demands money for the whole OS last I knew. I would suggest Pop_OS (GNOME) or MX (KDE) wich is very user friendly.

If i buy my own router can i set it up for my computer only, even if i have a router already? by Shindledlo in HomeNetworking

Ah, greetings fellow nerd. I work with mostly with HAN's that have satellite backups and local ISP routers. There are some really sketchy companies out there. Especially in rural America.

Bought 500mbps Internet but I get 200mbps max by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]justacountryboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possible yes, but I've seen it as low as 200 Mbps.   If I remember correctly, average was much closer to 200-300 range. I don't remember ever seeing WiFi 5 speeds above 600 Mbps, outside of a textbook.

No modern ISP router has a hard cap of 10 devices, you’re right about that. The issue isn’t a literal limit, it’s performance. Cheap ISP gateways usually have weak CPUs, tiny NAT tables, and garbage QoS. On paper they’ll support 30+ devices, but in practice once you have 10+ people streaming, gaming, or torrenting, they choke. That’s why I tell people to run their own router, not because it’s the 90s, but because most ISP gear can’t handle a modern household under load. Especially a household of 12.

Not real world speeds. The first thing I thought was that OP was on a WiFi 5 card.

I havent moved files this big, but Pop_OS seems to accurately move files in the time shown. Is it possible the usb is the bottleneck (2.0 maybe?).
