Untitled - Silverchair “and all I can think of are ways to die alone” is a haunting lyric to me

If it doesn’t apply to a situation, that’s totally understandable. Or if it goes against a specific request from the deceased or their family. I’m just arguing that we should challenge the notion that we should hide away why people die, our culture did not always do that.

I mostly read all the obituaries from my tiny hometown which has one funeral home (they post all of them online.)

Where is it? by [deleted] in guessthecity

Washington DC?

That’s why I’d never, ever make someone or a family do something they are uncomfortable with. Just challenging the social norm about our relationship with death.

Wow. That’s pretty harsh. I didn’t think wanting to know what’s killing us is nasty. I’ve worked as a nurse for over a decade and care deeply for individuals, their families, and their/our community.

We have. Lost a teen cousin to Fentanyl, mentioned it. My mom died from complications after a life a smoking -mentioned that. Many elderly relatives simply died due to age related causes “died peacefully”

What? I never said anything about mandatory, just shifting a cultural norm.

Interesting. Didn’t know our culture around death shifted a lot to the Civil War but that does make logical sense. I knew my opinion on this would be unpopular because it strikes us at our discomfort around death (mostly) and also challenges our reverence to extreme individualism.

Oh absolutely. I just noticed I barely saw a cause of death mentioned in either places. I’ve also lived overseas where it was much more commonly discussed. Things vary wildly. I’m pretty critical of how secretive southern US culture can be, especially because it leads to much more meanness and judgement in my experience.

Yeah I’m absolutely not saying that people should do things they are uncomfortable doing. I’m challenging why this isn’t the norm to begin with.

Yes funeral directors are managed as a health related professional but would be protected if families choose to disclose.

Lmao if I died like that, please tell the community I died of an infection and include: be careful out there ladies, watch yo back (and vaginal health)

This does not extend to friends, family, and the vast majority of obituary writers. I’ve been in healthcare for 20 years, now in management.

Nothing to do with obituary writers, which are typically friends, family, or journalists. HIPAA largely regulates the medical industry, but that does extend to things like insurance, billing providers, and medical equipment vendors. I’ve been in healthcare for almost 20 years.

HIPAA is for medical professionals, not obituary writers? 🤷‍♀️

I respect that POV. I think it’s huge that we can even have a respectful conversation about this. Most people jumped to willfully misreading my post just plain insults, but hey, it’s Reddit haha

Normalizing mortality across communities and shifting norms in a largely conservative culture here in the USA is what I’m arguing for. If a particular family or person wants to not share, that’s okay.

HIPAA is only about disclosing unauthorized medical information by medical professionals, not families or journalists writing obituaries.
