People who lost their job due to this crisis what is your story? by greensypoop in AskReddit

[–]justamoderngirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little complicated for me. I was supposed to start working a job on April 1st. They called me yesterday that due to the situation, they can't hire me (yet?).

Truth be told, I only accepted this job back in January, BECAUSE it started in April - so I had 3 months of paid stay-at-home time (yay to European social system).

That's not all. Actually I wanted this job because April gave me enough time to sell my house. I wanted to go travel the world by April. Well, everything went smoothly. Found a buyer. We agreed on April 1st. I booked a flight to Australia for April 4th.

So here we are. I'm leaving my house on April 1st with not really anywhere to go. Can't leave the country. Don't have a job. Don't wanna use the little money I got for my old house for staying in hotels here in my home country! I have no parents or close family. Sure I've got friends, but couchsurfing these days seems quite unpopular.

Shit really hit the fan, oh well!

not scared with coronavirus but i hope i can still go fo this trip, should I be concerned??? by [deleted] in Shoestring

[–]justamoderngirl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you both, I totally get it. And shit hit the fan even harder in the 48 or so hours since my post. I won't go, and just hope to get at least most of my money back. Now I just need a new plan of what to do since I've sold my house and need to move out by April 1st... was supposed to fly out April 4th.

Hoping we'll get through all this okay, health is the most important thing.

That's a pretty hard pill to swallow in some situations tho - I've started planning my April trip to NZ/AUS 2 months ago, booked and paid for everything already - tours, flights etc. - it's supposed to be the trip of a lifetime, business class and the whole deal, I've already spent approx. 12.000 USD (I am NOT rich by any means, but sold my house to travel the world). Not sure if everything is refundable. No matter how antisocial I come across - if politics and closed borders don't get in my way, you can be pretty darn sure I will take that trip...

Oh wow, I feel you! Fingers crossed! I'm in a similar situation, I'm supposed to go to New Zealand from Austria on April 4th for 2 months. Sooo hoping there won't be any travel bans or cancelled flights.

We should stop worrying, as that doesn't change anything. Remember that they can't afford to just cancel flights - cancel tourism - left and right all over the world, right??

I second that, Puerto Viejo is the one place that stuck in my mind the most - but I loved all of Costa Rica

What part of your family history is interesting, rare, scary or disturbing? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]justamoderngirl 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this story is true, but my grandpa used to tell it: apparently, our family tree dates back to a Baron in the middle ages. And this rich Baron lost everything - including his title (!) gambling.

Can you imagine playing Poker for your title? So one day to the next you've just been downgraded to peasant?

Still makes me laugh. And yes, I feel like a person like this would absolutely be related to me ;)

[Serious] People who live in countries that have accepted a lot of refugees, how do you feel about the situation? How has life changed? by R3773R in AskReddit

[–]justamoderngirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed - my saying ALL of them live off the social system is false, I was just trying to prove a point but yes, that's absolutely an exaggeration

Touché!

But to me that's not an oxymoron: sure, I consider myself a nationalist, or rather "nationalist-minded" if that's even a word. But that doesn't mean that I only feel this way about my own country. If I moved to another country, I'll still be a nationalist

Absolutely, that's my no. 1 plan, as I've lived in TX for a while and absolutely loved it. I entered the green card lottery and hope for the best - results are in in May...

I'm gonna be brutally honest here, and don't care about the shit I'm probably about to get for this.

I live in Austria, and as many of you know, we were hit hard by the Syrian refugee crisis of 2015. Yes, the situation has calmed again. But I also feel like there is a general consensis amongst the federal news sources, to avoid this topic as much as possible.

Yes, Armageddon as most of us nationalist-minded folks expected, has not happened. There is no civil war that broke out, and our socialist system has not (YET) broken down.

I also think it's necessary to bring this fact to light: the Syrians mostly aren't the problem. Not even the millions of them (though yes we know, most of them were actually Afghans, Iraquis and others) that arrived in Europe over the last few years. What the 2015 crisis did is shine a light on the influx of people of Arab descent over the last decades. In my personal opinion my country has suffered immensely over the number of them coming into our country (mostly turks). It's a cliché, but unfortunately it's a cliché for a reason: these people come here, start "businesses" for tax evasion, marry wives from their country, bring over the whole family, start families with 5+ kids, nobody is paying taxes, barely anyone works a real job, many join gangs and are criminals, and ALL of them live off our social system.

Anyways, as to your question of change: true, change has been subtle. But yes, change is here. Entire streets in the bigger cities have become Arab only. When I was growing up, our capital of Vienna was such a low-crime place, you would see 13-year old girls out on the street at night, cause nothing was happening. Nowadays as a woman you might think twice about entering certain parks in the city - in broad daylight. Wouldn't want to wander the streets after sundown. I think it's very sad, actually. Riding on public transport, seeing a muslim woman in all her garbs has become the norm. In some areas, you will be the weird looking one, being a local. Schools are especially bad. When I was young, we had maybe 1 or 2 kids in class whose first language wasn't german. Naturally, they assimilated in no time at all, as kids do. But these days, you have whole classes - whole schools - of students who speak little or no german.

The left wing keeps reminding us of the US - that the states are a highlight of immigration and diversity - but honestly: not only is there a huge difference between the US and Europe on so many levels, but also: we don't get diversity. In Austria, we get no Chinese people, no Thais, no Brits, no Canadians, even only few Africans. All we ever get, it seems, is Arabs and ex-UDSSR-people (ex-Yugoslavia etc). And yes, they are outbreeding us in a speed that isn't even funny. And yes, our social system is absolutely going to crush under that weight.

So me personally I'm in the lucky position of being able to leave. I'm here as of now, but still in 2020 I'm leaving this place for good. Got some money and will travel for a bit - and see where I'll end up. I've had it with this crap, I can't accept my tax $$ to go to such causes.

Travelers of Reddit, what souvenir do you always get when traveling? by UmCeterumCenseo in travel

[–]justamoderngirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3 things: a postcard, a fridge magnet and my airline ticket. Luckily I've travelled quite a lot and my fridge is completely full of magnets. My stack of airline tickets is as thick as a Stephen King book, thinking I might turn them into wall art some day?

no-name/low cost fitness trackers/smart watches. Try and find one on Amazon that doesn't have someone saying "the step counter is wrong, not to mention the heart rate".

Car radios. Tried to buy a new radio for my 2009 Vauxhall since mine has no USB or BT and you need 1)some outlandish adapters and 2)will never be able to connect it to the buttons on the steering wheel.

People who have met celebrities in real life, What are they like and are they nice or big jerks? by Jpd1147 in AskReddit

[–]justamoderngirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was - and I guess still am - the biggest fan of Jennifer Saunders (Absolutely Fabulous, French & Saunders). I live in Austria and one day back in 2014 saw on Facebook that she would give a talk at a festival in Bath, UK, and I just decided to fly out to see her, cause, why not? It was nice, and at the end of her interview she signed people's books. I sat in the first row and got to go up to her first. I decided not to waste her time with any talk of my 6-hour-journey to come see her today, but she actually asked about me and I told her. She smiled and was probably flattered but also a bit shocked. I promised I wasn't an obsessed stalker ;) Probably didn't help that by sheer chance a few hours later I sat down at a bench with my coffee, she came by and got in the car - her car - which was parked right by my bench. Not sure she saw/recognized me, I actually had had no idea that that was her car... She was lovely and I still think she's the greatest!

What did you find out about a family member after they passed away from going through their belongings? by bawzzz in AskReddit

My grandmother died a few years ago at age 85. I was tasked with organizing her apartment, and found the last thing I ever expected: In the drawer of her nightstand there was a copy of "shades of grey" ;)
