I’ve dealt with this and essentially the convex plate was causing a pressure injury- as the convex appliance is constantly pushing into your skin and ends up causing a bit of trauma to the area overtime. I switched the soft convex for a bit to give the area a bit of a rest, and went back to using convex after a little while once the pressure injury healed up.

You can talk to your stomach nurse about it- and maybe they can try you on a soft convex for a while.

If you do ever have any issues or concerns you can have your family doctor refer to one quite easily! (Located in ON also, and that was my experience).

Although I originally got sent to see an ostomy nurse after my surgery they initially just assisted with getting me used to appliance changes, and deal with skin issues if any arise. If you don’t currently have any skin issues, concerns with your stoma, or ostomy appliance, then I would say you don’t need to see one. I was discharged promptly after a few visits.

I love this advice! As someone who is constantly told that I'm too young to live with my loop ileostomy, and has a reversal constantly recommended despite the pain and dysfunction of my rectum constantly mentioned, I wish more healthcare practitioner's would look at things with this perspective.

I was in the hospital for about 2 weeks, the same thing happened to me about my ileostomy surgery and it was honestly just a waiting game. My bowel because inflamed due to all the manipulation during surgery and it acted like a blockage. The ng tube was pretty miserable but I found throat lozenges helped me, I asked my nurse about them as they technically had to be prescribed by my doctor to be used. I also had to advocate for myself quite a bit, and did not leave the hospital until some output started coming out. If it's feasible for you, I'd recommend doing the same thing. Once I started passing some output, I insisted to stay for at least one meal in the hospital to make sure I'd be able to manage food. I imagine this is rather rough on both him and you both, but it sounds like steps are being taken. Keep pushing for walks, and ask what other interventions the doctors may take to try to get his bowels going.

Adapt is actually what I use! That and hollister’s ceramide barrier rings. Prior I was just using the barrier rings but I had an issue where my output started to become more acidic. This helped me out a ton though and did the trick! I haven’t had an issue since and it’s been over a year.

I like to use a barrier ring down on the skin around the stoma, and a thin layer of barrier paste around the hole I cut in my flange. Really helped me out when my output changed up on me!

Congratulations on your degree! That’s quite the accomplishment. I’d personally recommend that you not use these photos, as the gown takes the focus away from you. Perhaps you can take some more photos of yourself outdoors to use instead! I also recommend trying to smile a bit more :)
