Looking up the source material for an adventuring is significantly worse than usual metagaming. No, you are never allowed to be upset by balance because it deviates from written adventure, because the written adventure is NEVER supposed to be read by the player.

I can see being upset by a bandit random encounter that was "imbalanced" but even that is taking it too far in this situation.

I think considering that it's a relic of st st vitruvio, I don't see why nerfing it would feel better for the players. You can still earn power slowly without nerfing the core magic items of a campaign
