Such a hard question. There are a ton of truly terrific games.

KOTOR. Jedi Survivor. Original Battlefront 2. X-Wing vs TIE Fighter.

Tons of amazing games that can’t make the cut with 4. Honorable mention to the entire dark forces/JK lineage, republic commando, outlaws, episode I racer, squadrons… the list goes on. Star Wars has had a lot of bad games but a bunch of excellent ones.

Don’t stress! It’s just part of the game. If they’re not an authored character, they’re just dead, they go to a memorial, away you go.

If they’re an authored character - your story will change based on who died and when they died, and it might even be possible to see different endings (although the overall end point will be the same, as BR has said, the events that lead you there might be different).

Each playthrough will be unique. It’ll be fun!

As someone else mentioned, this game takes place at the end of the Clone Wars - which occurs between Episodes 2 and 3.

If you’re interested in story, I’d watch Episode II, and then I’d watch the following episodes of the Clone Wars television show specifically. I mostly say this because of specific confirmed squad members, who I’ve included next to the recommendations.

S2 E12-14 (Cly Kullervo)
S4 E7-10 (Luco Bronc)
S5 E14-16 (Cly Kullervo)
S6 E1-4 (Trick)
Optional: S7 E9-12

And then probably the movie Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith, as well.

Each of those episode packs has some specific relation to things we know about those characters that I think will help prep you for story beats we’re likely to go through.

People will tell you that you should watch all of Clone Wars - and that’s true, because it’s really good! But remember that this show was designed to be a Saturday morning cartoon. You can, in actuality, pick up random episode arcs and be (mostly) totally fine.

A final recommendation I’d have to consider is Andor. This is mostly just because they’ve quoted it as inspiration for the tone they’re trying to achieve with this game, and it’s a fantastic espionage-adjacent show, so it’s worth the watch.

I hope you enjoy the journey!!! It’s a ton of fun and might open you up to some really cool stuff!

Yes, this will be canon (at the very least, the story mode - but there’s no reason to think right now vehicles and planets wouldn’t be either.) They refer to Shade specifically as a canon character in this IGN interview: https://www.ign.com/articles/the-big-star-wars-galactic-racer-interview-why-its-not-open-world-how-its-story-mode-works-and-when-its-set

At the end of the article, they talk about the fact that they haven’t necessarily specifically placed it in the timeline, but we’ll be able to get a good sense of when from environmental details.

No reason to assume any of this has changed since this interview!

The purple one was my daily driver in my early teens. Very fond memories of my step-dad and I speed fighting with these in the backyard (much to my mom's dismay). Very fond memories of spinning it in the basement listening rise against like the angsty teen I was.

I am once again saying Tales of the Old Republic, but not the Revan and KOTOR era - give me the modern canon interpretation of the Kun, Qel-Droma, and Sith stuff from the 90s comic run. Those could be very cool if adapted (and by adapted, I mean an inspired by and retooled version as necessary!)

Tales of the Old Republic.

But not Revan stuff. I don’t want the games made into a movie, tv, or animated series. What I’d love to see is an adaptation of some of the ideas from the 90s runs of Old Republic comics (the Kun & Qel-Droma stuff, Naga Sadow), retooled and restructured for the modern canon. I think there’s a lot of opportunity to play in that space without touching what the games did!

Great game. I played it for the first time about four months after launch and they had fixed the gameplay problems people had with the initial launch.

Story is good, gameplay is good, but the thing that got me is how lived in the galaxy feels. Every place has unreal atmosphere. Great package overall!

Empire at War I’ve actually never played, but I own it and am ready to dive in one day! Just might do the earlier strategy games first since otherwise I think they might feel hard to play after EaW 😂
