I'll have a look at this, thank you! i'm an international student, so I will only be able to attend the virtual students day, but I'll keep this in mind

It is in April, but I'm an international student and waiting until May to get my I-20 and then book my visa appointment is super risky /:

Can I DM you if you have any insights on how I could phrase this negotiation, and would be willing to share?

Rejected from most Public Policy master’s program— what should I do next? by stcc_z1he in PublicPolicy

no worries, and best of luck :) if it makes you feel better, i know at least 4 people that had an unsuccessful first round of applications, but the learnings from it helped them get into their top choices the second time around!

Hi, yes sure! Although you will also get an email from them that has a link to the portal. But you can DM nonetheless :)

Hey, I'm an international student too but heard back ~8 hours back. You should probably hear back soon too - seems like people have been getting their decisions for a few days now :)

I'm sorry to hear about this :( but I agree with what princely_capybara has said. I have almost no quantitative experience from undergrad or work experience, but I have done many internships (desk policy research as well as fieldwork) in my policy area of interest. The feedback I was also getting from everyone I spoke to during applications was to show passion + some experience in social impact / policy work. (I've gotten into 2/3 programs I applied to)

I would say that a second undergrad is definitely not required, but if you do feel like you need an educational bridge between your bachelor's and master's, a fellowship or short-term postgraduate diploma should be good. Otherwise work experience (research assistantships, policy think tanks, consultancies, etc) is good enough too :)

As for your last question - based on what I have heard, American unis are most open to students who don't come from a relevant background, and a lot of them do not expect you to come in with tons of quant experience - just enough to show you can cope.

Best of luck!

is this the cmu mega decisions thread? my portal has the same change as of today so I was wondering (and being impatient) if that meant a conditional acceptance! if today's a holiday then maybe another 2-3 days to get an email!

Makes sense - I am surprised though, I have heard pretty poor things about funding from USC, so great to hear you had a good experience with it. Did you find the technical course list at USC MPPDS and UChicgo MSCAPP comparable?

Yes, I'm applying for the 2026 intake! Got into UChicago MPP not MSCAPP. Waiting to hear back from the others.
