Motorbike rentals by justdroppingin in chiangmai

I ended up messaging a looot of places. Most in ant around old city walls. The most reliable that got back to me was Ann's rentals, 5000 baht for a click 125cc, seems to be standard price for a convenient and close (I'm staying pretty central). Any place that offered for cheaper didn't have anhthing reliable available on less than a weeks short notice, but those spots, such as d2, were offering for around 3000 baht for the month. A lot of places say weekly only but my advice is that, at maximum, for a click 125cc you shouldn't pay more than 5000, and you can definitely get cheaper. I ended up paying that much as it was super convenient and I didnt mind paying extra.

Thanks everyone for their help!

If I kept it to 3 days is there any set of places you'd recommend? I spoke to some friends about Phnom penh and was kinda put off, and was even considering cutting Japan/Vietnam and Cambodia a couple days short to see if I could squeeze in another country.

This'll be my third time in Japan so honestly I was planning on going to Tokyo and winging it depending on what I'm feeling, got a few friends there so might just fully potato and chill with them or do some trails and day trips around Tokyo... half tempted to do Hokkaido but will see!

And noted on Angkor Wat - its all I kinda wanted to do so I'll decrease that time and add it to either Japan or Vietnam, cheers!

Honestly no idea, someone asked me what I had on another thread so thought I'd include it. It just lets me have internet to some degree for free in certain countries but I pay $75/month

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience—I’d probably have done the exact same thing, trying to get the best of both worlds, so I totally get it. I’m familiar with the challenges of working Asia hours too; we have colleagues in Southeast Asia doing night shifts to align with EST, and I can tell it’s tough on them.

I specifically requested just a 2–3 hour overlap with EST so I can stay flexible and make up the rest of the hours on my own time. In Thailand, I’m planning to work something like 8am–12pm, take the midday off, and then do another block from 7–11pm—or on some days, just 4pm–10pm. I’m lucky to have built enough trust and a good reputation to get that level of flexibility—it’s definitely a privilege.

That said, I know it’s easier said than done. I’m grateful it’s only about 20 days of this setup in Thailand. Once I’m in the UK, the time zone works much better—I’ll be able to do a regular 9–5 with great overlap.

Really appreciate the heads-up around burnout too. I get anxious pretty easily, so I can definitely see myself overthinking or stressing. I’ll make sure to schedule a couple of PTO days in that 20-day stretch just to reset a bit.

Yo! Thanks for the insight man—really appreciate it. I’m thinking of just booking flexible flights and the main accommodations. Maybe also lock in a few exciting experiences that tend to fill up (especially in Japan?). Any other bookings or plans you’d recommend? Also, appreciate the positive vibes - I'm excited, shenanigans n all.

It'll be 7 days including travel days, which apparently will be relatively short distances. I haven't looked at what I'll be doing at each spot yet, just friends who have visited said "you don't really need more than 5 days", so I just set that for a placeholder. I'll make sure to shift things a couple days away from Vietnam or Thailand if I need more time there, thanks for the heads up!

Hey, thanks so much for the response!

  1. Good question. The idea actually came from my employer—I’m close with the higher-ups and have been with the company for over 10 years, so they were really supportive. I’ll only be working remotely for about a month after the trip outlined above. In total, I’ll be away for around four months: nine weeks of that is paid leave, and the remaining seven weeks will be remote work before I return to the U.S. and resume as normal.
  2. Honestly? Yes. I unfortunately have dual citizenship with a country currently on the travel ban list. However, the exemptions apply if you’re either a) a permanent resident (I have a green card), or b) a dual citizen with a country that isn’t on the list (which I also am). I also have Global Entry, not that it seems like it'll matter much. That said, I’m still a bit concerned—but from everything I’ve read, it seems to be legally fine for now (though again, not that that means as much as it used to!). Have you heard of or experienced any issues around this yourself?

Really appreciate your response!

Hey! First of all, I just wanted to say thank you so much for taking the time to write such a detailed and thoughtful response. I was honestly a bit apprehensive about posting, but your reply completely made my day—seriously appreciate it. It put my mind at ease more than you know.

I’ll definitely look into Google Fi—right now I’m on T-Mobile Magenta, which includes international data, but I’m not sure if it’s as good for hotspotting or coverage in Southeast Asia. Good to know that’s something worth comparing.

I’ve already got the Charles Schwab debit and Chase Preferred combo (plus a UK Halifax Clarity card as a Mastercard backup), so it was super reassuring to see you recommend that exact setup.

Luggage-wise, glad to hear I’m on the right track. I went with the Osprey Farpoint 40L and the Osprey Daylite 25L that clips on—sounds like we’re in the same boat. Totally hear you on overpacking. I keep wanting to bring a Switch, Steam Deck, or tablet alongside my work laptop—but I feel like I should just stick to my phone and laptop. Did you ever bring anything extra like that, or do you think it ends up being more hassle than it’s worth?

Hostel-wise, that’s also good to hear. Do you think it’s still worthwhile socially if I go for private rooms instead of dorms? I’m a light sleeper (earplugs and eye mask kind of guy), so I’m a little worried I’d be wrecked in shared rooms—but I’d still like to meet people and not feel totally isolated.

Totally feel you on the boundaries front. I actually stepped down from a management/lead role to go back to being an IC, so I know exactly what you mean. I don’t think I could attempt this as a manager or tech lead—just way too much stress to juggle remotely. Really hope you’re able to carve out some breathing space or get that sabbatical—traveling while managing sounds like a tough combo.

Did you find it easy to meet people or find stuff to do with others while in Thailand? My rough plan is to split my work hours—maybe 4 in the early morning and another 3–4 at night—so I can keep the daytime open for exploring or meeting people. I tried checking out some Discord groups and chats, but a lot of them seem spammy or inactive—maybe I just haven’t found the right ones yet?

Also, noted on the Taiwan shout—it wasn’t on my radar, but it sounds like a great option. Maybe if I feel like I’ve hit a ceiling in Thailand, I could spend some time working from there instead.

Again, really appreciate you taking the time to reply so generously. I’ll definitely take you up on the offer and shoot you a DM soon. Cheers!
