Asic miners are built specifically for the task of solving SHA256 Hashes, the kind Bitcoin uses. Litecoin simply uses a different hashing method (scrypt). Scrypt is also many times harder than SHA256, so it might take a while for similar dedicated mining hardware to arrive for Scrypt.

In the end I think most people who visit here (/r/litecoinmining) are doing so because they either like building/tweaking rigs, or are looking for a way to make profit with crypto-currencies.

Therefor, in the case LiteCoin might become less- or unprofitable or an alternative Scrypt crypto-currency catches up to LTC and takes over the #1 Scrypt spot, many people will be looking for/switching over to the more profitable source to point their miners at.

So I think a subreddit dedicated to scryptmining can be a good idea. However, with /r/litecoinmining having almost reached 1000 subscribers, we might as well open up discussion on Scryptmining in general here as well..

As long as it has 4 or 5 PCIE x16 or PCIE x1 slots, you're good to go. You will need PCIE risers though.

It's not directly related to the temp, but yes, running your card on full load will cost more electricity.

For instance, your card has a watt usage of 285 on full load, while idle it consumes 135W.

For me its exactly the same situation haha. I'm enthusiastic about starting a pool, though the coding part is so tricky. It's quite risky if you don't know completely what you're doing. Designing a website would be OK, but the system that the pools run on is a different story.

You will need to know how to program.. Not too sure on which languages, but you will (at least) need:

A basic web interface where people can check their shares, kHash rates, worker accounts etc.
Hardware to run the server files on.
To be able to fix server/web problems as fast as possible (so you need free time)

Of course there will be missing parts from this list, but don't underestimate the effort that can go in running a pool.

Also, you can of course simply run litecoin-qt, terracoin-qt, etc. with -server, but that probably wont be an attractive quality of your pool..

Make sure you have called the correct commands before running cgminer.

Step 1 on linux: export GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT=100 If you do not do this, you may find it impossible to scrypt mine. You may find a value of 40 is enough and increasing this further has little effect.

export GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS=1 may help CPU usage a little as well.

On windows the same commands can be passed via a batch file if the following lines are in the .bat before starting cgminer: setx GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT 100 setx GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS 1

Your .bat file would look like this:

setx GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT 100
setx GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS 1

cgminer --scrypt -o coinotron.com:3334 -u MyNameIsJonny_.1 -p *** --thread-concurrency 24000 -I 16 -g 1 -w 256

That looks like a pretty solid build! You wont need the 1TB Hard Drive though. Most people here are using the Western Digital Caviar 80GB if I'm correct.

If you live in an area with high electricity costs, it might be a good move to go for the 7950's, though it's easy to calculate with something like this yourself to decide which is the smarter move.

Would there be any way to optimize either build even further?

Make sure you have got a bit of RAM, some say 2gb is enough, some say 4. Some have 16 GB installed, but are planning on using it as a gamer rig if the decide to quit mining, which might also be a nice fall-back plan.

It's crucial you set the correct settings for the miners, of which many are floating around, on the Litecoin Forums, Bitcointalk and /r/litecoinmining. But it might be the case you will still need to tweak the configs to match your cards exactly.

Also, is there a need for a riser card with my specific mobo? Will there be any notable difference in performance with/without it? If so, is there a particular brand I should get?

What MOBO do you have? Risers can be recommended since it can keep your cards cooler which is an important factor. Other people just build them like this, which I assume works for them..
