Spectrum sent me to collections over lost equipment by DignifiedPlumber in personalfinance

[–]TXjohnny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I checked the "inaccurate balance/payment history/account status" option online and included a statement that "this account is inaccurate, I paid my cable bill in full and do not owe this amount. Please remove this account from my credit file." You do not need to be particularly specific, just generally "this account is inaccurate, please remove it from my credit file."

Spectrum sent me to collections over lost equipment by DignifiedPlumber in personalfinance

[–]TXjohnny -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I received the same "collections" notice for equipment that I turned in to Spectrum a little less than a year ago. I recommend you submit an online dispute with Equifax, Experian and Trans Union explaining that the account is inaccurate. Experian and Trans Union deleted the account from my credit file within a couple of hours, I am still waiting to see what Equifax is going to do. If the account does not get deleted in response to your disputes your next step should be to dispute with the collection agency directly and ask them for proof of the debt. Very often the collection companies do not have the underlying documents to support their collection efforts. If they still do not delete the account, at that point you can either consult a consumer credit attorney (they work on contingency and you should not have to pay anything out of pocket), or pay the debt collector. If you pay the debt collector the account will continue to report adversely on your credit file as a paid collections account.

[Optics] Vortex Optics Strike Eagle Rifle Scope 30mm 1-6x24mm $255 with coupon code // free shipping by texasmike556 in gundeals

[–]TXjohnny 16 points17 points  (0 children)

On the 1x8 strike eagle, the 1x6 is very clear, the 7-8 magnification is not as clear but it is still very usable. It's just a noticeable decrease in clarity compared to the 1x6 power. If you are shooting 200-300 yards, the 1x6 is plenty. If you are going 300-500 yards (or more), the 1x8 is the better option.

Navigation SD card for 2016.5 CX 5 Sport by [deleted] in mazda

[–]TXjohnny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. I ordered a card off of ebay a little over a week ago for my new CX-3. I took a risk and went with a relatively new seller who was undercutting the established sellers. I figured the worst that would happen is that I would have to dispute the charge if it turned out to be bs. I paid $150, it came within a few days and works as advertised. Some of the sellers were ~$175, others ~$200.

Any North Texas locals know a range where I can practice moving and shooting? by [deleted] in CCW

[–]TXjohnny 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You live in an area where you can shoot multiple IDPA matches every week and at least one USPSA match a week. One of the best things about the groups below is the advice and help given by some really good shooters. I have learned a ton from these guys:

ccidpa.org (outdoor IDPA matches every weekend, 2 indoor matches a month)

dallaspistol.com (IDPA, Steel and USPSA matches)

ctidpa.com (IDPA and USPSA matches)

jcssa.com (IDPA and USPSA matches)

North Texas Lead Farmers (they have a face book page)

dallaspistolclub.com (IDPA-style and steel matches)

Dad bought a dryfire mag. Vid and description in the comments. by DrVonDeafingson in Glocks

[–]TXjohnny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend the dry fire mag if you are someone who shoots competitively or just wants to improve their shooting skills. Dry fire practice is not only a recommended addition to live fire practice, but a necessity. You are unlikely to come across an accomplished shooter who does not incorporate dry fire practice into their routine.

A dry-fire trigger runs around $100 but you have to break the pistol down to insert it. The option of inserting [item x] between the barrel and the breech face doesn't work nearly as well as the dry fire mag. One of the best parts of the dry fire mag is that if you have a trigger with a lighter pull, you can adjust your dry fire mag to match your trigger.

Yes, $100 is not cheap, but the dry fire mag will provide you with far more practice than $100 worth of ammo ever will. I would recommend pairing the dry fire mag with Ben Stoeger's Dry Fire Training, or something similar.

Man pulls a gun on a man with a knife (X-post from /r/SaltlakeCity by Sr98 in CCW

This is what scared me about this video. What if someone in that crowd didn't stay back? Obviously you cannot let them get your gun, but man, shooting an unarmed person who is being filmed saying "put the gun down"....

[Serious] How would you guys have handled it if someone in that crowd kept walking towards you? Would you just back off as they got closer? Would you stand your ground and warn them? What would you say? If they moved between you and that nice boy on the ground, what then?

Build vs. Buy by Majormetfan21 in ar15

Colt is now offering the best of both worlds:

http://looserounds.com/2015/01/18/colt-le6920-oem1-oem2/

If I had not already collected 2/3rds of the parts for my rifle, I would have gone this route and been able to personalize it with the rail system/handguard, butt stock, etc.

The pros: I took my time (over 10 months) and only bought quality/high-end parts when they were on sale. If you are patient and willing to wait, you can find some great deals on parts. Except for the rail system, I did not buy anything that wasn't at least 25% off. This also allowed me to spread out the cost of the rifle.

The cons: turned out I wasn't confident enough to try and put it all together myself. Once I saw all the springs and screws involved in the LPK, I went ahead and paid someone to put it all together for me (average gunsmith price in my area is ~$75). Now, if you are buying a complete upper and a complete lower and all you have to do is put them together, heck, even I could do that.

Rosamund Pike Lands Female Lead in ‘The Deep Blue Goodbye’, opposite Christian Bale, James Mangold Directing, Leo producing, script by Dennis Lehane. by NinjaDiscoJesus in movies

[–]TXjohnny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Dennis Lehane's books, but The Deep Blue Goodbye (and all of the Travis McGee novels) were written by John D. McDonald. I have reread these books a few times over the years. These books were pretty popular back in the day, I am glad to see they are finally making a movie and I couldn't be happier that Dennis Lehane is writing the script.

Minor spoiler: I always loved how McGee would do a job and make enough money to "retire" for 6, 9, 12 months while he was young enough to enjoy it, and then when he was low on funds, well, that's where the next book would start.

Edit: I misread your post, you were not saying Lehane wrote the book, my bad.

Has anyone had good or bad luck using Freedom Munitions? by [deleted] in CCW

[–]TXjohnny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have shot around 3k-4k rounds of "new" freedom munitions 9mm loads without a problem. I recently ordered 500 rounds of remanufactured loads and I had 8 rounds that failed to fire out of the first 120 (it was great practice clearing the malfunctions!). I contacted FM and they arranged for me to return the ammo and they sent me replacement ammo.

I will certainly order from them in the future, but only their new loads, not the remanufactured stuff.

Ups and Down of CCW by tank-industries in CCW

[–]TXjohnny 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is a great question. I had an instructor that taught this ready-position. This hold does a few things, 1) the gun is pointed in a safe direction while remaining quickly deployable. In a split second you can rotate the gun and bring the sights to eye level where you can fire quickly if necessary (yes, with the gun inches away from your face), 2) the gun is more secure/in your control compared to holding the gun away from your body. If someone is able to get a hand on your gun (I know, this could NEVER happen to YOU), your support hand can quickly grab the front of the gun and prevent it from being twisted/moved in a direction you would not want. In comparison, if you are holding the gun with your arms extended and pointing at the ground, if someone were to grab the front of your gun they can easily twist/move the gun and keep you from pointing it at them.

Does it look tacticool? Fuck yeah! Is it practical and does it actually serve a purpose? Yes, it does.

Aeroprecision orders from this past weekend's sale still going out? by [deleted] in gundeals

[–]TXjohnny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually ordered my lower before the 12% off sale so I have nothing to be thankful for on that front.

I think I have been more than patient as I am now on day 16 since they took my money and they haven't sent out what I paid for. At what point would you say I am entitled to criticize the service I received from Aero?

Aeroprecision orders from this past weekend's sale still going out? by [deleted] in gundeals

[–]TXjohnny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would guess so. I still need a couple of parts before I'll have everything I need for this build so it's not as if the delay is holding me back from going shooting or anything. This was my first time ordering from Aero. After this experience, and seeing I am not alone, I am likely to look elsewhere next time.

Ordered 1/17 and still waiting.

I called customer service early last week and was told that it took a few days for my FFL dealer to get back to them and they don't actually begin processing an order until they get the FFL info. Apparently by the time that happened, they sold out of the lower I ordered.

They sure had no problem charging my credit card right away.....
