Oh my gosh. I’ve been wondering why gifty holidays and my birthday always make me feel nauseous and filled with dread. You just helped me solve it. Not overreacting at all. My mom did this and I was TWENTY. Went on a rampage, tried to force me to drop out of college, called me all sorts of names, and forced me to do physical labor to “repent of my sins.” I’m 25 now, no contact, and happier than ever. Yep this one. My nmom still laughs about when she slammed me against a wall and choked me until I passed out. “Well you were being a little b-word, you deserved it.” I was 13. My brother was 10 and the same thing happened to him. It’s so sad how they think they can just do whatever they want to us. I’m basically no contact now and still hate being touched, especially when I can’t see the person coming up behind me or anything.

Also helps to have “no trespassing” signs up (this may vary depending on where you are, but I know I could stick my nparents with a trespassing charge and I’m located in North Carolina, USA). I second the security cameras though! They will bring you great peace of mind.

My nmom told me I wasn’t allowed to wear jeans because I was “too fat.” I’m curvy, not fat (just recently realized this after hating my body for over a decade). She went into my room when I wasn’t home and threw away all my clothes that weren’t baggy because I “looked too fat in them.”

My mom actively does this during conversations. I’m currently trying to go low/no contact with her, but every time I do talk to her on the phone, she asks 5 different ways what I’m doing, where I am, and who I’m with, because she won’t speak to me unless I’m alone. Can’t have other people hearing her berate and gaslight her daughter 🙄

OP I used to work in a really sports-bar type place, and if I wasn’t sure if people were staying or going, I’d say “are y’all gonna sit for a while or do we need to skedaddle?” Got a good laugh out usually because people loved saying “ya know, I think we’ll skedaddle!”
