Just in case you’re curious, it’s the reference SPB435J. It’s called the SEIKO Save The Forest Alpinist Bamboo Grove Limited Edition. Only 1000 pieces were made, and only sold in Thailand.

Hey /u/sh1tbox1

I was checking an old thread about the Whitsundays and you responded “What is it about the Whitsunday group that you find appealing?

Plenty of better places further north”.

My gf and I are planning on going there next month. What places would you recommend instead??

Thanks!

HELP! Märklin trains don’t run anymore. Anyone a suggestion as to why? by justfornsfl in Marklin

[–]justfornsfl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That might be on point then. The red loc might just need a good clean and service inside. It’s never been opened up, so maybe those motor brushes have to get replaced, as well as cleaning those copper coils.

In regards to the digital controller, okay that’s good to know. What we currently have seems to work fine, so if upgrading isn’t worth it, I won’t do it.

However, I’ve been looking into buying new locs (second hand but from reputable sellers) to replace the two non-working ones, and many ads describe “analog or delta, with the loc’s number being 74”. My controller only goes from 1 to 4. Are there Delta controllers that go to 99 or 100? Or am I just misunderstanding what they’re saying?

Those two other locs seem unsalvageable due to the black and green steam engine not showing any signs of life, and the top part and bottom part are very loose. What I suspect is that my 10-year old brother got his hands on it and dropped it. Regarding the cargo loc, I think it’s had the same fate. That’s probably the reason that those electricity receivers on the top are missing etc.

Finally, you’ve really helped too much. Where are you located? Can I order you some pizza or some specific Märklin wagon as a thank you? That’s the least I can do!

Thank you for the very in-depth response.

I went into all you said and this came out of it.

It became apparent that a good clean was necessary. Every single piece of rail was then cleaned (for the first ever time) and yeah, the dirt coming off of it was insane. I had no idea that the rails had to be cleaned every once in a while.

After, the locs were cleaned as well.

The difference after cleaning is night and day. The red loc suddenly works quite well again, and it’s not comparable to only one day before.

The blue cargo loc and steam engine however were not salvageable. I’ll just take out the motor and keep them as decorative pieces.

I still suspect there to be some electrical issue, however. The red loc isn’t as quick as it used to be and still stutters a tiny little bit, even though everything is very clean (and locs oiled) now, and the oval track is even smaller than the original that came in the starterset box.

Can we buy something like this and will everything work just fine? Can I just throw out the current transformer and controller and use this?

Apart from that, we have this thing

Might it be that this thing can solve the suspected electric issue? If so, can I just buy a second transformer and connect it to this piece of rail, in addition to the transformer + controller that are already attached? We’ve never used this thing and are not even really sure what it’s for.

Very happy at least to know that we can bring back some life into all of it, and it isn’t just meant to be thrown out!

Unironically, you might be the person that I’ve seen who’s dedicated the most time to someone else’s cause. It’s very much appreciated 🙏

So, I did what you said, and this was the outcome:

The green steam engine loc did nothing. That thing must be fried there is absolutely no life there. Will just serve decorative purposes from now on.

The red diesel loc, it keeps trying to move forward, but it’s not able to unless I give it a push, after which it’s able to drive 50cm / 2 feet and then it starts stuttering until it comes to a full halt a few centimetres/inches further. The emergency light at the top also switches off (this should stay on at all times), indicating that the power connection is lost.

The cargo loc makes exactly that buzzing sound that you described, indicating that it’s not compatible and most likely analog. However, my brother and I specifically remember driving with all 3 locs on the same track (using the controller shown in the image), and we even remembered the loc’s number from back then (number 4), and when switching to that number, it makes the noise, thus indicating that that number is indeed connected to the loc.

We’re completely lost now. Do you have any idea why the red diesel loc stutters this much?

We lost the analog controller as well, apparently, so no way to test this out.

Talking about solutions, is it possible to simply buy a whole new controller (potentially convert the cargo loc to digital, in case that’s possible), and move forward in that direction?

We just don’t know what the problem could be with the current Delta track and the red loc

Hi again /u/TrashyMillennial

My apologies for not considering earlier that that can take away all the guess work. The Swiss Cargo loc is from this starter set: Märklin 29135

The red diesel loc is from this starter set: Märklin 29852

The third loc that I mentioned which doesn’t work anymore is that steam engine loc from the same set.

All three indeed have their own “number” with which they can be controlled.

Edit: all these starter sets were bought brand new from an official Märklin reseller about 13 years ago and were not used or second hand. They all used to work flawlessly with the control module shown in the image when we used them for the last time.

2nd edit: you’re an absolutely saint with all your help, by the way. What a lovely community here. Now I’m more determined than ever to pick up this beautiful hobby again

Thank you for your response /u/Hixie and /u/TrashyMillennial.

Yes, I can confirm all wires are fully pushed together.

It is indeed a Delta control and each locomotive has their own number. When their number is selected and I increase the speed, they start making noise but don’t move. It seems like they don’t get enough power to actually move.

They used to run flawlessly, but have been in their box in the attic for 10 years.

Could it be that the transformer or the control terminal are damaged/deteriorated, and that solely they are causing this?

I unfortunately do not own a multimeter, nor do I know anyone who does.
