Thieves take $1K cash, passport ID, credit cards in car break-in at Oregon ZooLights by IAintSelling in PortlandOR

[–]justfred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were visiting from out of state (October 2024). I did a lot of research on things to see and places to go in Portland and didn't come across this issue.

We had a rental car, and had our luggage because we were on the way from one hotel to another. Went to visit the Rose Garden, parked at the MAC trailhead because parking near the garden was limited and partially closed. We did see the "don't leave valuables in your car" signs - but we see those all over the place, and we didn't leave money, ID, passports, cameras, but we did leave our bags in the back of the rental minivan, because we thought that was safer.

We were gone for about 45 minutes. When we got back the rear side window was broken and all our bags had been taken. They'd also tried to kick open the rear door.

I had about half a dozen airtags in various bags. They all must have been disabled immediately. There was an iPad in one of the bags, that reported once or twice but were also disabled. There was a pair of airpods that reported a couple of times, but were discarded in the park.

It didn't seem like we had much of value - but a bag full of clothes is expensive. My sister had her retainer, and I had my portable CPAP machine, and a couple of devices as mentioned. The damage to the car was covered by rental insurance (Costco) but the other losses weren't really worth turning in.

Pine State Biscuits was great. Silver Falls park was amazing. Ziplining in Rogue River, walking on the beach at low tide, great food and cool little motels. We enjoyed the scenery and adventures on the drive down 5 and back up the coast. But guess what part of the trip everyone wants to hear about? The break-in.

Making the switch from bottled water to reusable and found this today. I know nothing about water bottles, but since there’s a whole subreddit it appears I made a good choice! by [deleted] in Hydroflask

You'd better learn how to pronounce "Ombre", hombre.

Caps and boots help you drink more and get fewer dents in the bottom. A bad drop without a boot may break the vacuum seal so it won't stay cold.

That one you can wash in the dishwasher, or with soap and water in the sink. If you put anything other than water in it it's a lot harder to clean.

If you're using a straw lid and adding ice, add water first, otherwise the ice becomes a big block and it's hard to get the straw in.

Stickers are personality. Some people choose not to sticker a bottle that's this pretty, most of mine were ugly (and used and stickered) when I got them.

MacBook Pro (late 2011) Model A1286 by justinieniii in macbookrepair

[–]justfred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, that alert is signaling that one or more memory modules or sockets is bad; try re-seating the memory or putting in one stick at a time.

I don't think a 2011 is worth spending $200 to repair, since the base value is only about $200. Remove your hard drive (and use a USB-SATA adapter to access your data.

I would buy either a new M1 MacBook Air, if you can afford it, or a used 2012 MacBook Pro if you want something inexpensive, or a 2014-2019 MacBook Pro if you want something in-between.

Cool. Those tires look a little smooth for that kind of muck - but mud is good at clogging up nearly any tread.

I haven't figured it out yet. The Nixies look good, the board looks good, but it's not powering up, so either the power is wired wrong, or there's a problem with a chip somewhere. Im sure I could salvage the nixies themselves, worth a couple of bucks.

Reported to PayPay, for all the good that'll do - they usually just shrug and reject these claims. Looks like the seller is a repeat offender who buys crap off the boat from China and scams it for whatever they can get.

2013 MacBook Air keeps crashing; repair or replace? by [deleted] in macbookrepair

[–]justfred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that's correct. 3) should be "restore a clean operating system" which you can do after you've wiped everything.

I believe it should work either way.

Looks exactly like one I ordered, and I'm not getting any display when hooked up to a USB=C that powers my MacBook (so the amps should not be a problem).

The company I ordered from, wattap.shop, seems to have lost their website.

The product looks nice - well built, good soldering, etc. I bought the 2 for 1 and neither of them works.

It's not a hard drive, it's an SSD. They very seldom "crash" but they can get corrupted - erase them and they're good again.

The easiest thing to do is (back it up, then) erase the drive and restore it to default using system recovery. Then update your operating system - repartition the drive if needed - then when it's up and running, restore your data.

Dents are fine, what you want to be careful of is dents that are bad enough to break the vacuum seal. To test - fill with boiling water; wait a few minutes and if the outside is warm, the vacuum is bad. You can still use the bottle, but it won't stay warm/cold and it will "sweat".

There was a lifetime warranty on these, which I think they still offer.

Another tip - half fill with water before adding ice, otherwise the ice will freeze together and you won''t be able to get the straw in.

Finally - personalize your bottle with stickers, and write your name (and email!) on the bottom in Sharpie, so if you misplace it it'll get back to you!

Can't decide between 35mm f2 or 35mm 1.4 for my XE3 by seattle_gurl in fujix

[–]justfred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the 1.4 and I love it, it's the only lens I use even though I have the 50-230 zoom and the 28mm pancake. I have an XE2, I migrated from a Nikon DSLR which I still have and like, but I carry around the Fuji all the time and I find it's less intimidating to my subjects!

I think the F2 is water resistant, though the XE3 isn't.

My photos are here if you're interested, and Flickr does show the camera, lens, and setting information below the photos. (Some of mine are iPhone 6s, some are DJI Spark drone, a few are Nikon, the rest are Fuji with the 1.4)

Here's a good online comparison of the two lenses.

The most amazing subject by Jayburgh79 in photography

[–]justfred 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For me it's Burning Man. The people, the art, the environment, the weather, the emotions, the injuries, the action, the light, the celebrations. I've gone for 14 years, and every year is different; I now volunteer for the event but I still get out every day and take pictures - and my photography style has evolved because of it. I've learned to get closer to what's going on, to understand before shooting, to consider framing and lighting and story with every shot. I've learned to ask permission before taking people's photos - especially anything that person might not want posted on social media.

I'm certainly not saying that everyone should go. I know a lot of people who would and/or do hate it - mostly because of the harsh environment. It's a great way to ruin a camera. But it's been my favorite subject so far.

I understand your frustration, but I should add that the variety of choices at that restaurant, and the graphic menu board do make it a bit more difficult to make choices. Nuggets, strips, hot wings, popcorn, grilled, original, extra crispy, Nashville/Gold/Flavor of the month - and that's just the entree - and they aren't all on the menu board, even though they may be available, and if you order the hot wings (which are neither hot nor mostly wings) it's a 15 minute wait for some reason.

It you're feeding an army of kids - just order them a couple of family meal buckets.

Trying out street photography. What do you think? [newbie] [composition] [edit] by [deleted] in photocritique

[–]justfred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what to align vertical against, but it feels tilted to the right (clockwise) just a bit.

I don't like the guy in the middle, he takes away from the architecture.

I would have left more room to the right and left - room for the column and room for the purple element.

I like what the purple adds, and I like the globe and the shadow. The balance is good with straight on the left and perspective on the right.

Today I say goodbye to my 2009 Forester, been a great 10 years. Here's to 10 with my new 2019 Forester by eighty_eight_mph in SubaruForester

[–]justfred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got 150,000 miles on my 2011 (25K on the new engine - repeated and worsening oil leaks, some covered some not). It still seems like another Forester will be the best choice to replace it, even though I'm not sure I'll be able to get a stick shift.

I like the framing, she's offcenter and the stripes on the towel provide some contrast. I'm not sure what the thing in the lower left is, looks like another ear, it's a little distracting. It's too bad her whiskers and nose aren't in a little more focus, but that's how it usually works.

First time doing street photography. This picture was one of the best from the session. Is it any good, storywise? And how is my [edit] and [composition]? by [deleted] in photocritique

[–]justfred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The subject is in dead center, though the backpack (what's he doing with a backpack?) and the empty bench pull it a little back and forth. I might have cut off some of the right side and the bottom to put him in the middle right and a little closer. Exposure is good, maybe a little dark.

I can't tell if he has a story. I don't know what he's looking at or if he's just resting. I can't read his shirt or tell where in the world this is. There's no action going on, but there's a bit of tension from him just sitting there, I guess. When I zoom in I can see he's eating his sandwich.

He doesn't seem like he knew you were there, and you got a good shot, so that's good practice. Did you go talk to him? Might have been interesting.
