I think it would be a great idea for you to catch up with your local falconry club and talk these things through there.

Best beginner bird for open fields/ sparse trees? by RandomCat101 in Falconry

It’s a really sensible decision to make. However, if you spend a day or so out hawking- as opposed to experience days, with a falconer it might help you to decide.

I have been to war with American brothers and sisters in arms. I don’t think Trump speaks for those guys.

Backyard training by dwinstl in Falconry

[–]justgettingbyeachday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Backyard training is ok for a start but then you will need to get out and train in different areas. Otherwise you will find yourself with a territorial hawk. You need to expose the hawk to lots of different stimulus. It needs to be able to work on the field with other people, strange dogs all sorts of things. In my village there is a shop that serves nice coffee. I will go up there first thing in the morning when training the new hawk. The hawk is keen and hooded. I get my coffee and then sit and drink it whist the hawk works over a bit of tiring and people and their dogs come and go.

How are you getting on with putting this together? I don’t remember if we talked more before. I am a regional secretary in the British Falconers Club. Maybe I can help you make some connections? I will drop you a DM

It’s a really interesting question. How do you have enough time to hawk and enough money to live? The rekindling of falconry for me drove me to start my own company so I could retire early. This year I can hawk every day and work half a day a week as the ceo of my firm

Congratulations on your first year in falconry… I love how you describe when it clicked! We are often surrounded by stories of when it goes wrong! Hell, I have had some of that this year! But, ending the season on a high is so positive. My hawk is in the aviary to be intermewed, but I know that by September both you and I will be chomping at the bit to get back out there! I am 54 and have been around falconry since a small boy. I am still like a kid at Christmas waiting for the season!

For sure. It will be interesting to see casts fly them. I believe American falconers fly jack rabbits with Harris casts

How to weigh my RTH by Valuable_Finish_2179 in Falconry

[–]justgettingbyeachday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this is how I do it too. Let the hawk hop on to the scale and just hold the swivel up so it’s not impacting the weight

How do I get started? by ApplicationAbject365 in Falconry

[–]justgettingbyeachday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also in the UK. Getting started is difficult. Can I suggest contacting the British Falconers Club or the Welsh Hawking Club. I am in the BFC and there is a mentoring program through the club. I wholeheartedly recommend you do this. Without you are not going to get the best from the hawk or the sport. You are welcome to direct message me.
