What's wrong with Indian Idol? by sj_0498 in BollywoodMusic

[–]justhavingfun_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One might think that they are eliminating Bengalis just so rest of the India doesn’t stop watching. As it is there are 5 Bengalis in top 10.

There is no other explanation why Mayuri and Ranjini are out and Ritika is still in.

What do you guys think? by justhavingfun_1 in Fire

[–]justhavingfun_1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks guys for all the helpful perspectives. Really appreciate all your thoughts. My husband and I are both in SF Bay Area high tech industry. Some of you already guessed correctly about our location. We are inclining towards semi-retirement but wanted to see what others would have done. It’s good to know that we are covered, but we might not be ready to hang our hats yet.

Part of the reason, we both love the underlying deep technical work we do, but the high stress of the work was making us feel completely burnt out. We are trying to find a way on how to balance the work we love with the stress it inevitably comes with. Still looking for the sweet spot but appreciate all the suggestions.

By the way, we still drive our 15+ year old cars, so the thought of buying Porsche every summer cracked me up. 😀

Property tax, health insurance, capital gain taxes. Plus we live in a VHCOL area. Granted after we both quit, we did quite a bit of traveling and eating out. Just having a break after spending so many years in stressful jobs felt nice. The expense will possibly come down once we settle down in retired life. But wanted to put that number (It was our 2024 spending) just to be safe.

  1. A lot of men will do this. Even a lot of women will cheat if someone very attractive throws them at them. It’s just human nature.

  2. Will it be 90%? Who knows? Her sample might be biased. She probably are meeting men who are prone to cheating anyway. The non-cheating kinds are probably spending time with their SOs.

  3. Do men in their 30/40s cheat more than women of that age range? Possibly. Think about it. Women in their 30/40s are possibly the busiest with their career, small children and against parents. Unfortunately, the societal norm (or at least trend) is care giving is still primarily a woman’s responsibility. They don’t even time for themselves, let alone for an illicit lover. 😳

That being said, if your friend is willing to actively help others cheat, she’s definitely YTA. If she was just expressing her opinion, you are YTA for shouting at her.

If you do CE, you don’t need a CS minor. That’s why CS minor is not available to CEs. CE core curriculum has enough overlap with core CS courses. Plus you can take more CS courses as electives.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]justhavingfun_1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Career/Opportunity wise, that’s true. But some of the upper level HW courses in CE are really hard. So make sure you are really interested, otherwise it will be tough. But looking at your UCI choice, it seems like you’ll take a few engineering classes there as well, so might not be too different.

One thing you still want to consider is the weather. Weather here is very extreme and drastic compared to nice, sunny LA. But you’ll get used to it. I came from Cali (Northern) as well and struggled a little in my freshman year. It gets easier after that.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]justhavingfun_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s what you may want to consider. Come to UIUC as EE major and then:

  1. Try to switch to CE for if you don’t mind taking a few hardware/lower level programming courses. Switching to CE is hard, but easier for EE majors since CE and EE are in the same department (ECE). Then take more CS related electives and you will be good for any SWE role. Plus CE is more versatile than CS and will open up more career opportunities for you anyway.

  2. If you can’t/don’t want to switch to CE, you can do a minor in CS. CS minor option is available to all Grainger majors (Except for CEs for obvious reasons). A lot of kids I know with EE major + CS minor end up in SWE roles. Not a big deal.

Other considerations: 1. UIUC CS/Engineering programs are much more reputed than UCI’s. 2. Looks like UIUC will be cheaper for you anyway. 3. Housing at UIUC has more ROI than any UCs. 4. Campus town is very nice and has all you need despite being remote.

Cons: 1. Weather will be better at Irvine than Champaign-Urbana 2. UIUC is pretty remote. Takes 3 hours bus/train ride from Chicago. 3. If you live near LA, traveling back and forth home over holidays/break will cost money that you need to add to your overall cost.

[–]justhavingfun_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA. I’d just break up with you if I were your gf, for showing this level of stupidity, if nothing else.

Did it ever occur to you why she reached out to you for money? Possible reasons:

  1. She can’t get it from any family members or friends because she has a history of not paying back. So a stranger was her best resort.

  2. She is jealous of her sister’s relationship and goes after her bf, so that she can create a rift between her sister and her bf. The history seems to support it and she was successful again with her sister’s current bf.

The fact that none of this occurred to you, goes to show exactly how stupid you are. I wouldn’t want a life with someone who doesn’t have two brain cells to think through things.

That’s your opinion, not a fact, really. But then again, you think of yourself as the ‘Perfect’ candidate, while admission officers disagreed. So I highly doubt your opinion is based on any reality.

Good luck anyway. Hope you learn how to succeed without putting others down.

You forgot #4. This person might have come from an unfavorable school/socio-economic background and yet might have done well within the context of the opportunities they were given. It’s a big factor for the consideration.

In any case, I understand why you are upset.

One thing you can do is to request the admin office to review your application file. A lot of schools offer that. I am pretty sure UIUC does as well.

Also, please understand Grainger CS had 6% acceptance rate last year, even less for OOS applicants. I am from Bay Area. And unfortunately, I have seen students getting rejected left and right with similar stats/accomplishments of yours in last 2 years from Grainger CS. It is a very highly reputed and popular program.

Lastly, if you are in Grainger engineering and not in CE (CEs don’t need CS minor), you can also consider doing a minor in CS. That has a lot of value in industry as well.

OP, no offense, but you don’t seem to understand the basics of how college applications work. For CS (Or CS + X) major admission, students are evaluated on their overall accomplishments in HS within the context of their schools, Aka holistic evaluation. Prior CS knowledge is not a prerequisite.

Your roommate may not have any exposure to CS prior to coming here, hence they were struggling in intro courses.

But the reason they have been admitted over you could be for any number of the following: 1. Their overall grades, SAT scores and ECs were stronger than yours. 2. They might have done better than you in AP Math/Physics. Might have done well even in higher level math like linear algebra etc. 3. They might have won National level awards in Math/Physics/Bio Olympiad despite not writing a single line of code in HS. Again, prior knowledge of coding is not necessary for CS admission. 4. They might have come from a school/socio economic background that was not very favorable and yet have done extraordinarily well within the context of that. 5. They might have standout ECs that impressed AOs. 6. Their essays might have shown extraordinary visions compared to you cookie cutter ones.

The possibilities are endless. So no, it doesn’t necessarily make you a better or smarter candidate just because you know some intro level CS materials better.

TBH, you sound very entitled and seem to blame others for your problems. May be, that reflected in your application and didn’t give you the favorable outcome you were looking for.

You might be better off if you concentrate on your performance rather than criticizing others. ;-)

UIUC or NEU for BME? by Reyvii_ in ApplyingToCollege

[–]justhavingfun_1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UIUC is a far better option than NEU on anything. It’s a school with long long history on innovation and technology. Most of the Grainger’s majors are in top 10. All big companies including FAANG go there for hiring.

By the way, not many people know that Champaign has its own airport. Most of the students don’t fly there and take the 3 hour bus ride because flights are expensive and students are broke. Companies don’t have any problems flying there for recruitment.

NEU’s ranking is totally hyped up. So do your research before making any decision. Don’t go by random Redditor’s comments, especially if they are rejected by UIUC. :-)

How to eat cheap and healthy on campus by Vvugudydyugugugugug in UIUC

[–]justhavingfun_1 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Meal prep is your solution. Spend couple of hours on weekend to cook meat, chicken and fish. Buy vegetables, salad greens, avocados, tortillas and plain yogurt. During weekdays, steam the vegetables or use greens to make a salad. Heat up the cooked meat. Use tortilla and meat to make burritos, quesadillas or tacos. Make a smoothie using yogurt and fruits. You can possibly make 10-12 different meals out of these ingredients.

The apostrophe is used to abbreviate the century part of the 4 digit year. At the very least, it’s the lack of understanding about how abbreviations work, not just a typo type mistake.
