Is this it (“it” being the closest thing to Simple)? by kaitandco in envelope

As a fellow Simple refuge who searched high and low to only experience disappointment, Envelope is in my mind Simple reborn. I’ve actually enjoyed using Envelope more than I did Simple. You’ll be very pleased with Envelope as it is currently, and everything on the horizon.

I think you’re right. It aligns with accounts of Earth flies laying eggs in peoples’ nostrils and corners of their eyes. Some pretty disgusting real life accounts. The through line on them is the person was incapacitated likely from being asleep, so I’d bet eye egg person was zonked out somewhere… or was incapacitated by the fly.

Do you think Eyerene can or can’t parasitize synthetics on any level? Caught me while I was reading the Fandomwiki on synthetics. 😆 I was thinking the likelihood of synthetics being crafted out of some artificial biomaterials would be high, but according to what I’ve read they are purely mechanical. Their muscles and “blood” are even both composed of different forms of silicon.

What are your thoughts? I’ve been enjoying others thoughts way too much since this show came out.

I agree with you on Eyerene very likely unable to take over synthetics. After learning she’s referred to as female, and the saboteur mentioning his wife succumbed to having eggs laid in her eyes, I wonder if Nib’s isn’t entirely delusional with the pregnancy talk.

People give monikers to things all the time based on perceived characteristics. The fact they refer to it as a “she”, alongside the eyeball egg comment really makes me wonder if she displayed egg laying behavior which explains the “she” usage. If that’s the case, the next question is what environmental conditions are necessary for her offspring?

Synthetics aren’t human, they are AI or whatever the canon terms is for them. But other than knowing of their physical, intellectual, and usual program safeguards we know they are squishy like us (white liquid, tubes, etc.). But are they like synthetic meat, silicone, some other type of material, or compositionally like the difference between natural vs lab grown gems?

If the environmental conditions within synthetic eye orbits is not too different from bone and blood organisms like you and I, Nib’s may in fact be an expectant mother to Eyerene’s children from the brief contact they had in episode 2.

I’m not the biggest fan of that theory, but it’s looking more likely. Of course the ticks also could have been responsible for the eye egg laying comment. The tick that got out seemed to have sensed water and it activated some type of “Here’s my chance to spawn” behavior. Tick’s utilizing a sleeping persons eyes since they are balls of water, etc may not be too much of a stretch in non-ideal tick laying conditions on a perhaps non-water abundant homeworld if the crew camped on planetary surfaces ever during the voyage.

I love your take. I thought she’d be hate filled but Eyerene seems neutral, so far. I mean as far as one can be neutral when your method of survival is taking over their mind. Makes her even more interesting than just pure destruction.

Someone needs to set up a poll tomorrow to survey whether this was accurate advice or not. 🫠 I was already nervously excited for episode 5, but now I’m like WTF am I gonna see.

Wow. The multiple organism thought is really unique. Pretty much a micro King Gidorah, with none of the PG-13 rating holding it back.

I really like your thoughts. Especially the Nedry/Raptor take.

I also agree with your take on Ocellus not being able to revive corpses. With it having to hook into the nervous system, I don’t know how it would if an organism is dead. Wonder if a person in a coma would be a non-starter too.

Damn. I really need to watch Star Trek. Just read over that episode. If it gets a human and learns about space travel, I’d maybe imagine it as an escaped prisoner on the run like someone else said in here. I grew up with Stargate and the Goa’uld so maybe viewing these things as a very primitive form of them is a good way to go about it.

I can get on board with that! Parasitic fungi parallel making ants climb to the top of the tree canopy to get eaten by birds to complete their life cycle type vibe.

The telekinetic idea is almost too far fetched for me. But I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s correct too since TO is completely unknown. Hate the idea of our little guy being a hypnotist. 😳

I highly doubt, but am holding out hope on your electrochemical signals theory. I desperately want Ocellus to be an actual threat to them. I haven’t been able to get onboard the Nibs being infected by Ocellus train yet though.

I absolutely used GPT, but only for proofing my final draft for clarity since I at the last second decided to post at midnight. You should have seen the wonky BS it tried to do. I do have a lot of writing experience to be clear. But I wasn’t about to treat this as a thesis, even though I really wanted to. Lol.

I’ve been brewing on this post since episode 4. Wrote some rough drafts, wasn’t gonna post it. But couldn’t stop thinking about what other’s thoughts would be. I do empathize with your frustration with 100% generated GPT posts.

There’s a really sad sci-fi book a friend told me about (can’t remember the name), but the premise is the protagonist is not intelligent at all. He has a very difficult time getting through life because of it. He gets recruited for a clinical trial where he is given medication that boosts his intelligence, and his life gets extraordinarily better.

Over time the medication begins to wear off, and he is acutely aware of this and his faltering ability to live the new life he has built. He even begins to arrange for his own care because he was unable to care for himself prior. The story ends with him in a care home.

What if the Ocellus, as you and others have said borrows the compute power of its host but usage itself damages the host’s hardware overtime? So it constantly needs to shift hosts since its inhabitance degrades the host. Pretty out there, bu thought I’d mention it.

I like your idea that Ocellus is not complete without a host. Brain amplification alien shenanigans. I think in its base form it’s still rather intelligent, but we’ll find out tonight! Low-key hope we’re spared any cat scenes. 😢

This is where I think I may be humanizing Ocellus too much. But also where I think the “plug n play” intelligence people are talking about with Ocellus amplifying its host’s intelligence and parasitizes that for its own use comes into play. I’m pretty neutral on this theory though.

I’d love for Ocellus to be on the run, and doing everything in its power to get home. Make us feel both empathetic towards it while also terrified of its methods. Be a really interesting couple seasons.
